Driving down a road and approaching an intersection where the crossing road changes names at the intersection. In other words, I'm driving north on Main street with an intersection directly in front of me. If I turn left I'm on Elm Street. If I go right I'm on 1st Street.
How does Garmin determine which street name to show on the screen for the approaching intersection (in the above example why would it show Elm Street instead of 1st Street or vice versa)? I discussed this with a friend who has a Garmin 176 and his does the same thing (shows one street name at the intersection instead of two). Neither of us know how the displayed street name is selected, or why both aren't displayed.

I'm not positive but I think that it picks the road that would be a right turn from the intersection. At least that's how it seems to work for me.

Not for me. I've seen it pick both ways.

Well the easiest one for me to think of is a turn off of a divided road so that may be why it choses the way it does.

I've always seen mine work the way atszyman explained it. That is, it has always displayed the name of the street that was on my side of the road. My GPS-V does exactly the same thing, which is where I first noticed this, and started watching. Here in southern MD, just counting Route 210 (Indian Head Hwy), we have several intersections where this happens. Each time, it has always picked the road name that was on my side of the street/to my right.

I'm in Maryland as well, but in upper Montgomery County. Take a look at MD Route 27 from Germantown to Damascus. I take this drive everyday on my commute home. Heading north on Rt 27 (Ridge Road) approaching the intersection of Marlboro Road (to the left) and Sweepstakes Road (to the right). For my commute, I turn right onto Sweepstakes. However, if I'm not "routing" and am just using the map, it calls the intersection Marlboro Road. If I'm routing, it calls it Sweepstakes Road. Now, going in to work in the mornings, I take MD Rt 124 (Woodfield Road which is on the opposite end of Sweepstakes road) southbound. There are several intersections along 124 that have roads with differing names on either side of 124. Some of them it addresses by the left side, some by the right side. Is it maybe alphabetic? I mean, maybe the algorthm used in the search for intersections displays the first name it comes across in an alpha sort.

I knew you were from the area since it's under your name. Anyway, I can't explain what is happening with your situation. I know it's not the "alphabetical agorythm" in my situation. No matter which way I'm going, it has always shown me the road to the right. Example; MD Rte 210 at Livingston Rd/Kirby Hill Rd just outside the beltway. If I'm going northbound, it displays "Livingston Road ahead", and if I'm going southbound, it displays "Kirby Hill Road ahead". The only time that I know of where it didn't show the road to the right was when the intersection was not a "perfect" crossing, but the crossing street were a little offset from each other.
