While trying to install R3, after erasing user data as instructed, the palm logo came on. Then the unit timed off while I was unzipping R3 and preparing to install it.
When I turned the unit back on all I got was a white screen. Tried hard resets, ESC, turning the unit off and on several times, all to no effect.
Am I dead in the water??

So you didn't even get to begin with the upgrade, as far as the iQue is concerned, right?
A hard reset should have brought it back to the state you got it in (well, less an upgrade to R2, which you may have done yourself).
I've never experienced that a reset, hard or soft, rendered the unit unusable. If no kind of reset helps (have you tried all in the book, i.e. the FAQ?), then I assume it's time to get in touch with Garmin.

From Cinderk, in another thread:
There are a few different types of reset that you can try, in addition to soft and hard. The different types that I know (or think I know ) about are as follows:
SOFT: This is when you simply poke the reset pin in the back of the iQue.
HARD: This is when you hold down the power key while you poke the reset pin in the back of the iQue. You keep holding it until you see the Palm Powered screen. Once you see this screen and then release the button, you will have the option of erasing all data in RAM.
WARM: (I'm not sure if this is the official term for this.) This is another standard Palm reset that is slightly more extensive than a soft reset. I think it basically resets the Palm without starting certain system extentions or patches or something. I think it's like booting Windows into Safe Mode. You perform it by holding down the Up key while you poke the reset pin in the back of the iQue. Keep holding until the unit fully reboots. If it works, you can try deleting files that you think are causing the reset loop. You get back to normal by performing a soft reset (I believe).
DEBUG: (I'm not sure if this is the official term for this.) This is another standard Palm reset that (I think) puts the Palm into a state that can be useful for debugging or loading code by devolopers. You see it simply display the standard Palm color pallete. This reset probably won't do anything for you. You perform it by holding down the Down key while you poke the reset pin in the back of the iQue. Keep holding until the unit reboots to the colorful screen.
THUMB WHEEL: This is an iQue-specific reset (I believe). You perform it by holding in the Thumb Wheel while you poke the reset pin in the back of the iQue. Keep holding until the unit fully reboots. I believe this reset is slightly more extensive than a hard reset, though I'm not sure exactly how.
NON-VOL: This is an iQue-specific reset. You perform it by holding down the ESC & DateBook buttons while you poke the reset pin in the back of the iQue. Keep holding until you get to the next recognizable screen. (I can't remember if it reboots fully or if it asks you to clear the memory.) If I remember correctly, this clears RAM (like a normal hard reset) in addition to clearing non-volatile memory, which is where Garmin stores a lot of their GPS-specific data and settings.
I'm not sure if any of these will help you, but given your iQue's current state, it probably couldn't hurt to try them.
Hope this helps.

Those are the ones I referred to.
Particularily the non-vol thing, since a hard didn't help. Hard reset doesn't clear the non-vol memory.
But my guess is that your unit has gone to its' fathers.
