Newbie question regarding FTP.

I have the host address of the computer I wish to send a file to (e.g. 12.123.123.12) as well as the host name and their password. I managed to successfully transfer a file to this address from my PC today using a trial downloaded programme called cuteftp (www.cuteftp.com) but am lost how to use the information in the Netbook programme.

I keep getting a "Program Closed" Dialogue box containing:

Program nFTP
Reason Code: KERN-EXEC
Reason Number: 3

Could someone please "walk me " through what I should be entering and where in the "Connect" tab screens. I would also appreciate in hearing of any known problems using nFTP and WiFi.

As always - thanks for the help.

Hi Calbrit,

I had some trouble with this also. Here are settings I use:

General:
Site label: Quick connect
Host Address: type your IP Address

User details:
Username: user name as specified in cuteftp
Password: password as specified in cuteftp

Advanced:
Initial local folder: Transfer (a folder I created specifically for ftp’ing files)
Initial local disk: D
Initial remote folder:
Port: 21
Type: Ascii

My initial problem was the port and type that did not match my ftp program. Also if you are connecting through a router or firewall make sure that you have that set up properly! This could be a miserable task!

I remember having this problem with nFTP when I was tyring to set up an FTP to my iMac.
I found nFTP more stable than RMRFTP but this latter is worth trying.

My Netbook and iMac each have a static IP address on my WiFi Network.
I did have to make sure my firewall was set to allow connection to my FTP port, and also that your in initial remote folder is correct. Mine is "./Downloads/Gfiles/" on my Mac.

Try turning off any firewall to test if you can get any further.
I find 'passive' transfers troublesome, so try to avoid them. Perhaps CuteFTP is doing these by default?

The Kern3 error - Make sure you have enough free memory space on C (shut other progs down on the Netbook).

Hint: for your PC you might like to try WSFTPLE (www.ipswitch.com), which is free for academic and I believe perhaps personal use.

It was tough trying to get FTP to work via WiFi from the Netbook but it does work. Mine works great now and was worth the tears.
