With my last Palm m505, I was a massive convert to Wordsmith Pro. When I got my T3 I tried to load it up again, then went to the web site (Handmark), to up grade it. When I did that the programme didn't work at all, so I got in touch with them (v fast reply, well done Handmark!), with the result being that they told me to delete the old prog completley, and load the new one fresh.
Now works like a charm.
Just thought that this may be of some use to someone.

Are Handmark Wordsmith users entitled to free upgrades? If so, how?
What version of Wordsmith do you have? I have 2.2.10.
I am very interested in your post because I was just going to email Handmark about Wordsmith upgrades?
Thanks for taking the time to post.

The new version running as I speak is v 3.01. As far as I'm aware your current serial number works when you register the new version...if that makes sense!
Not being the sharpest knife in draw, if you have any doubts give 'em a shout at Handmark, I did and they got back to me within 6 hours. I either got them on a slow day, or else their support dept is very much on the ball, the latter I hope!

By the way, where do I get the new version?
The trial from the Handmark website or the Blue Nomad website?
Thanks in advance,

Hey! Good afternoon Abid.
I had 2.2.10 myself, and recently did as Dropshort did and upgraded to 2.2.17. Works much better. BE SURE AND ALSO ASK FOR THE WORDCOMPLETE UPGRADE (3.01, although BlueNomad are actually up to 3.03) -- previous versions WILL NOT WORK IN WordSmith.
I deleted ALL OF IT, desktop as well, and RELOADED the new one (it comes as adesktop setup with the handheld app as part of it -- you can't upgrade just the handheld version). That way you know the conduits are "all square" as well.
I'm thrilled about Dropshort announcement of 3.0/3.1 -- I only got 2.2.17 LAST WEEK.
It also runs well in Flash now, -- 2.2.10 froze. 2.2.17 is great in flash - if that's of interest. No need then for WordView (Docs2Go) and the accompanying fonts, totalling 1.2 meg with the 3rd "access file" which is called WWP--- something." That knocks out 1.2MB of room, less the 550k for Wordsmith - gain of 700k!!
I'm going to Handmark right now and check this out.

According to the Handmark Site 3/8/04, 2:30PM Pacific Time, LATEST VERSION IS 2.2.17.
Don't have a clue about the 3.0 thing -- it ain't there.
Abid: 2.217 is worth upgrading to.

Tbanks a lot for your reply.
Waht do you mean by Flash?
Anyways, your instructions make sense and I will uninstall and then install the new version of Wordsmith (2.2.17).
Thanks a lot again

Sorry folks,
When I looked at what version I had gone to I was looking at WordComplete, and not Wordsmith, which as has been pointed out should have read 2.2.17 and not 3.0.
Very sorry to have caused any confusion.

I got my v.2.2.21 from Blue Nomad, or at least that‘s what the “Options” “About” says it is, and I believe I just upgraded without deleting the old one first, but my memory aint all that good. If anybody needs it I can post the newer version here. You will still need your code, if it does not just upgrade automatically to a registered version. Just let me know.

One more thought, for those of you who like to keep your programs updated, or at least be free to consider upgrading, I use TrackerDog which automatically checks for new upgrades available on most reputable programs. It does so automatically on hotsync (obviously if you enable to conduit). Someone else has a pay version, but this one is free and having tried both, the free one works much better, in my opinion, and the price is right.
The site is: http://trackerdog.a0soft.com/

Thanks a lot.
This is a very useful app, as indeed, I did have to go manually searching for new updates periodically on HandanGo or PalmGear.
For some apps, it was even worse; they weren't listed on PalmGear/HandanGo and I had to google them to find the developer webpage.
Thaks for digging this app out.:D

1. It seems to me over the past few months that Blue Nomad ALWAYS has newer versions of WordComplete and WordSmith; THEY have 3.03 of WordComplete, Handmarks's newest as of yesterday (they gave it to me) was 3.01.
WordSmith 2.2.21? Newest on Handmark is 2.2.17. Strange. Guess I should have purchased from BlueNomad direct, not Handmark -- they always seem "behind."
As far as Tracker, I clicked on to site and my FIREWALL went off in flames indicating "just stopped a NEWTEAR attack." This is often indicative of spyware; that means they can be monitoring what you have in your PALM folder while they're being "so lovely and affording you upgrade info." Hmmm. . . . . No thanks.
Thanks for all the info on this thread however - I will check in to different "trackers" and advise here. W/Smith 2.2.17 works great for me -- 2.2.21 might be better but haven't heard or read why.
Take care all

If you are upgrading to the newer versions of Wordsmith, please take a bit of advice from someone who often 'clicks' before he thinks..... on the Blue Nomad site it quite clearly says (although if your name is Dropshort, you just skip over this bit....) that if you bought your version from Handmark, upgrades need to be carried out through Handmark, and not through the Blue Nomad site. DO NOT DO AS I DID and ignore this, or else you, like me, will end up mucking everthing up, and having to spend ages customising your dictionary again (you know things like 'programme' and 'realise', 'defense'.........).
Am now waiting on Handmark to send me the updated WordComplete again.
Lesson Learnt?: Always follow the instructions.

In theory, yes - but I had to EMAIL Handmark and request it from a great guy that works there named Eric Haar. I would put the email to his attention and somewhere in the body tell him you're a friend of Paul in California who recommended you contact him.
Advise him you need the LATEST WordComplete Version, which according to Handmark is 3.01. The ACTUAL latest is 3.03, but Blue Nomad are a little slow in supplying latest -- even to their biggest distributor!! If you think this is a hassle, Abid, try dealing with Blue Nomad -- they wouldn't send me the updated version unless I PHOTOCOPIED THE SOFTWARE BOX (Yeah, I have THAT after 2 years . . . .) and FAX IT TO THEM??!!!
Eric is the best and you should have it next morning. FILE SIZE is around 35-40k for the prc, and 100k for the stock dictionary, which I don't use. I make my own custom one -- you really don't need "giraffe" popping up in the middle of a letter!!
Helpful hint: if you use TealScript, design a one letter macro that makes "th" or Th." This triggers WordComplete to bring up this, though, there, therefore, thank you for your letter of, et cetera -- as long as you have WordComplete configured to activate after TWO (2) letters.
Take care Buddy.

If I say yes will you roll your eyes and never speak to me again??? Hahahaha. No, my friend, I do not. I am considering trying TealMovie and TealAuto. TealGlance is popular but I get the same thing with Agendus. TealEcho is great for beginners learning graffiti, but 1) I think it can be a crutch and 2) the T3 does it anyway.
Without putting everyone to sleep with a list, I have the rest of them and they're what make my palm a REAL palm.
I firmly believe without Tealpoint the palm is a box that lights up and what REALLY impressed me was their customer service 2.5 years ago when I didn't want to be bothered with the web -- a young girl named SARA (who left to go back to school) actually MAILED ME A CD from her home, with her own stamps, so I could try the apps. Right there they sold me. Been loyal ever since, and they've gotten even better. Amanda not only filled Sara's shoes, she went out and bought more shoes!! She's absolutely wonderful - Tex has fixed more stuff than God and he's actually ACCESSIBLE. Good Lord.
The app I missed the most from OS4, incompatible with OS5, was a little known one called TealMembrain, which allowed you to boost the dynamic stack and the amount of memory any one "busy" app could call up from the Palm OS. That's why my 505 never crashed despite overclocking at 42MHz and running 9 hacks!! WELL, about 15 minutes after your TealMover joke yesterday, the new 1.90 was posted -- and guess what -- it ALLOWS YOU to boost the dynamic stack request of ANY app -- permanently -- if you're having crashes. The default is 3300k-4096k, and if you're having trouble boost it to around 5500-6,000. I boosted Agendus, Mobile DBase, and WordSmith to 5500. Kinoma, to their credit, already had theirs set at 16,000!
There are a couple of Teal apps NO ONE should be without: T/Master, Launch, Script and Mover. That's around $50 total and will FUNDAMENTALLY change the way you use your T3 or anything else. Follow that up with TealTools and TealLock, and you really could stop right there -- you'd have a WAY DIFFERENT, absolutely secure and "multi task" palm, much more configurable and useable.
Thanks for asking - I really will try to stop "HERDING" people into Teal stuff but it's only because they've done so much for me -- and rising fast on the list along with them would be BRAYDER and JackSprat/JackFlash. Wish those kids could get together and have lunch and buy out palmOne -- we'd be rocking then!! If Tealpoint ever came out with their own handheld, I wouldn't take a NANOSECOND to switch. Period.
Talk to you soon.

What is the use(s) of wordsmith ?? people
abid786
03-10-2004, 08:28 PM
Wordsmith is the best, imho, software for the Palm to edit converted Rich Text Documents.
WS provides seamless integration with Word.
It can also act as an enhanced memo pad, having color, font size, and attributes (bold, italics, etc). This enhanced memopad part is free! So I recommend you try it!
Anyways, all Wordsmith doesn't support is basically tables (i have wordview for that) and pictures (word view). Other than that Docs To Go in my opinion is a waste of money and memory on your Palm.
To Paul: I got his (Eric Haar's) email within 5 hours! Now that is tech support! Personally, I didn't think that it would be that dfast, but I just checked my email and there it was!!!
Thanks a lot!

I'm in absolute agreement with you on WordSmith - WordView kinda "blows" and the fonts are huge (700k +267k for fonts -- 1MB+ -- and it still looks crappy in "italics").
I'm a spreadsheet guy, and used TinySheet for 2 years. Problem is their desktop "syncmanager" is DREADFUL. At 294k vs Sheet2Go's 900k, I'm almost considering switching back to T/Sheet although I like the "look" of Sheet2Go. If I use TinySheet, I will be deleting Docs2Go although THEIR desktop manager is REALLY GOOD, in my opinion. I RARELY use the desktop to write a sheet in Excel and TRANSFER to the handheld; all my entries are handheld only - and TinySheet DOES back up the databases both on hotsync and to cardbackup. Something to consider, plus the fact that TinySheet has been DISCONTINUED by Iambic. Sooner or later I'd be back to Docs2Go anyway.
WordSmith, by the way, asks the Palm OS for 4096k of dynamic stack memory when it's opened - that's why I mentioned TealMover's new version -- IF YOU HAVE TEALMOVER (I think you do) update to 1.90 (free), and BOOST THE 4096 to 5500 or 6,000 - you'll notice a difference, especially if you use pop up menus (other apps) WHILE IN WORDSMITH. Smooths things out a little.
I'm personally still looking for something that will "show" a copied web page AS IT WAS ON THE PC, not just text. I understand WebPro 3.0 will do it but at 1.5MB, is it worth it if I'm not actually "surfing" on the T3?

Wordsmith? Its availabe at bluenomad's website (http://store.yahoo.com/bluenomad/blunomsofpro.html), and is $29.95.
However, you can get it at Handango (http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?productType=2&optionId=1_1_2&jid=8C7FF3164D91D6D5XBD417BC39AAEBD4&platformId=1&siteId=1&productId=13605§ionId=0&catalog=1&txtSearch=wordsmith), also for 29.95.
I I recommend purchasing it at Handmark, due to the marvellous customer support. That can be found here: http://handmark.com/products/detail.php?id=47

Yes. That is actually the only way I know of it--the version on the CD is actually a trial, but has a pull out card that has the serial number on it.

Okay, that's fine. Thank you for apologising.
I edited your two posts into one, as they only needed to be in one. When you add two posts one after the other, try to remember to use the "edit" button, and add the extra info into the same post, so you don't keep replying to yourself. Just a tip. And please try not to do posts that just say "Kool!" or "Nice" or "YEAH", as I may have to remove them. We appreciate your input, but posts that consist of one word can become tedious as they needlessly increase the length of threads.
Thanks.
