When I send larger e mails through a mobile phone (use Nokia 6310i) using infra red - it always disconnects on 5mx
It is always ok to send smaller messages but tends to happen with large messages with lots of text or with attachments.
It doesn't happen with large faxes I can send pages and pages with absolutely no problem...just e mails and is occasionally erratic ie sometimes it is ok (rarely)
What can be done (other than buying a travel modem) to enable me to continue using the phone to access e mails?

What settings are you using? The settings I use with a 6310i are:
------------------
Name - Nokia 6310i
Speed - 115200
Connect - Infrared
Fax Class - Auto
------------------
Init (reset) - AT&F&K3
Data - AT+CBST=16,0,1 (This is only for 28.8kbps with HSCSD. For normal 9.6kbps try AT+CBST=12,0,1)
Fax - (blank)
------------------
Flow - Hardware (RTS/CTS)
Terminal (DSR/DTR) [ ] not checked
Carrier (DCD) [ ] not checked
Type - Mobile
------------------
I haven't actually sent any large attachments as I only got the phone recently but I will give it a try :)

I have just sent and retrieved an attachment of about 88k without problems using my 6310i.
If you haven't already done so, you should also install the "Mobile Connectivity Update" which you can download from the "Series 5(mx)" page of my website. This improves the reliability of IR connections.

Mike
I tried those settings u suggested (varying from the data setting AT &CBST) between 12 and 16. Wasn't sure which one I should be using (presumably the one for 9.6??)
I also downloaded the mobile connectivity update from your site(by the way..am I supposed to actually run something on Psion..when I go to ADD/REMOVE it says the program has installed) but am I supposed to do something more active? Am I supposed to run something or specify my phone...If so I wasn't sure how to run the program as no icon appears. Does the program actually do something to change the settings by itself without me doing anything?.
Anyway - with the settings u suggested,,when sending a large file it still tries to send it, it states 'sending e mail' but then the 'D' sign on the phone goes from dark to light, and a few seconds later the call cuts out. The Psion thinks it is still sending (ie it still states in little window Sending mail 1 of 1)
Anyway this used to also happen on my last phone a Nokia 6210 - and like u I have very recently just purchased this 6310i which leads me to think there is probably something wrong with me as opposed to the phone or the psion (connects to internet and sends short e mails perfectly)

I tried those settings u suggested (varying from the data setting AT &CBST) between 12 and 16. Wasn't sure which one I should be using (presumably the one for 9.6??) If you are in the UK, Orange is the only network which supports HSCSD with a connection speed of 28,800bps. If your network doesn't support HSCSD, try just leaving the data string blank.
I also downloaded the mobile connectivity update....
....when I go to ADD/REMOVE it says the program has installed) but am I supposed to do something more active? No, if it appears in Add/Remove then the updated IR drivers have been installed - you don't do anything further with it. Anyway - with the settings u suggested,,when sending a large file it still tries to send it, it states 'sending e mail' but then the 'D' sign on the phone goes from dark to light, and a few seconds later the call cuts out. Try changing the "Init (reset) string" to AT&F&K4 and change the flow control to Software (Xon/Xoff) which was always the recommended 'generic' configuration for Nokia phones. It might also be worth performing a soft reset just to clean things up with the operating system.

Mike
I am on Orange.
Put in settings as follows...
Init (reset) AT&F&K3
Data AT+CBST=16,0,1
Flow control Software (XON/XOFF)
But still no luck..now it seems to say 'problem communicating with modem'
Tried other settings you suggested along with soft reset.
What do u think should the settings be in light of fact it is an orange phone 6310i
Do u have any other suggestions?

Hi Robert,
I am on Orange aswell and have similar problems sending larger emails/attachments. I am still only using 9600k speeds as contract not up for a month or so and then I will look at the faster connection options. 9/10 my phone will disconnect without during the sending of the email. There could be a couple of other reasons for this.
1) Orange give voice calls higher priority to data. This means that if you are connected using data and they get a sudden surge of voice calls in a particular cell, your call will be dropped !! nice eh?
2) What ISP are you using?. I found alot of problems with certain ISP's whos modems did not like lower speed connections (freenetname was one of these). I could connect and send ok using a PC Card modem + adapter but try my modem and it would kick me off. Downloading email wasn't too bad but sending was always a provblem. I currently use both FreeUK and Lineone (now Tiscali) both are pretty stable when sending stuff via mobile but occasionally still get the problem.
3) Another thing you could try is is on your internet settings. Under the ISP selection are two time boxes: If idle, stay online for and On exit, stay online for. I have set both of these to 10.00 mins. The main reason for this was that I was getting kicked out every time Opera fell over but I was also told that this helped with mobile connections as the psion was not always looking to close down the connection everytime you shut an internet application or if an app went a bit wrong.
Hope you manage to get things sorted.
Regards
Si

No, use the settings exactly as I had them in my earlier message - AT&K3 sets the modem to hardware flow control so the 5mx should use Hardware (RTS/CTS).
However, I would suggest you delete the modem configuration completely, perform a soft reset and then set up the details again from scratch to see if that improves things.
