Can you load Palm Desktop and City Select on a laptop in addition to a desktop? I mean, is it legal?
I retired and got a part time job that'll require travel. Bought a laptop (my first one), a cell phone (ditto), switched internet service provider (for "local" numbers on the road). My life is all shook up.
I was hoping I could lug along the laptop, and keep Betty synchronized and load any additional regions that I might need all from a motel room. Now I'm wondering if it's okay legally, and, if it is, what to look out for. I'd love some advice!
Thanks, Ferd
Yes it's OK
A useful accessorie for travel & laptop setup is the boxwave mini-sync cable (power up and sync iQue from a USB port).
Thanks, Qyd!
Is there any advantage over the Garmin cradle, other than size? Does the Boxwave cable have to be plugged in to an outlet like the Garmin cradle?
When I tried to install maps on the laptop, the only destination choice I had was internal memory. How do I inform the software that I have a card?
When I tried to synch to the laptop, Betty never connected. (Didn't have a problem at the desk top back when Betty was young -- she hot synched the first time I tried.) Any idea what's going on with that? Windows said that it recognized the new hardware.
Thanks -- all help will be much appreciated!

Yesterday I installed everything on my laptop, the hotsync worked quite well. Only I have, again, the soft with the setup Cd that I do not like, so had to delete.

Ferd: Try reinstalling again a second chance with the laptop, uninstalling the soft previously.

Fred,
Though I use a mac at home, I travel with a Sony Vaio laptop. After learning that Garmin does not support macs, I installed the software on the laptop and did not encountered any problems. SInce then I purchsased the "missing link" and can sync my iQue with my mac (though not the maps).

Boxwave cable: yes, it's the size, and no, no outlet, it's powered directly by the USB port

The only time when iQue didn't hotsync was when the hotsync manager was not started on the laptop (you might want to check if the iQue-craddle connection is tight, or try it with infra-red if your laptop has an IR port).
-Install maps on the laptop: do you mean the installation of the city select cd on the computer?
-internal memory: or install maps on the iQue, shiching between internal memory and SD card?
-recognising hardware: that should be no issue, as all communication is done via hotsync protocol.

First install the setup CD that came with the IQ. Once the setup is finished, additional options will be available. The second option installs all the CitySelect maps to the PC hard drive.
Choose the second option and copy the maps to the laptop. The installation will ask you to remove the setup CD and install City Select Disk 1, later followed by Disk 2. After the installation is completed, you are asked to reinstert the setup CD. Now you can exit the installation.
The updated Palm Desktop now will have a new icon to add maps to the IQ called "Map Install". When you click on this icon, you will select the maps you want to load to your IQ. The program will ask you where to store the selected maps on the IQ, internal or SD card.
Hope this helps... cokyq
Thanks, guys. Looks like I'm up and ready to roam.
Apparently I originally screwed up twice: Didn't leave Betty in her cradle the whole time when setting up, and when I went to install maps I didn't realize that there were two users present. One was from the iQue, and one from the setup (I think). When I chose the one from the iQue, the download was able to offer the card as an option for loading maps. Don't know why the other user name wasn't associated with a card, but not a problem now that it's working. I deleted the user name that didn't work, so I won't be attacked by senior moments later.
Thanks for the tip on the Boxwave cable, Qyd. I'm gonna order one as soon as I hang up here!
