Hello,
I just picked up a T3 This week, replacing my old nr70. I have a whole bunch of questions I need answers on.... I thank all those in advance for their responses.
1. Datebook alarm sound:
Any notice the low setting for the alarm being too loud? an alarm went off while i had earphones attached and it was deafening. Is there a fix for this?
2. MP3 sound quality:
After using the mp3 player in the nr90v i notice the t3 offers inferior sound quality... does anyone know if this is because of RealOne or is there a driver/update i can install?
3.Voice memo popping up when i use the slider:
I notice a few times while using the slider (either to open or close) that voice memo will pop up. I'm pretty sure i'm not pressing the side button... does anyone get this problem?
4. Hotsync issues: I'm having difficulty getting consistent hotsyncs for the T3. hotsync's will work initially (first 2 or 3 times) but will stop working. Just wondering if anyone's had this issue.
5. Wondering how to tell if your t3 is refurbished...
Is there a way you can tell if your palm was refurbished, i remember on the old m505's there was an r at the end of your serial number to denote this. the last couple letters of my serial number is EWR.
Whew! Thanks for all those who made it this far!
I love my T3 and wouldn't want to trade it for anything.... (cept maybe a ux50 or th-55)
Regards,
John

I may be able to answer some of those questions
1. 1. Datebook alarm sound:

A: I think there may be a probelm with your speaker becasue people complane about the T3 speakers being to soft
2. MP3 sound quality:
After using the mp3 player in the nr90v i notice the t3 offers inferior sound quality... does anyone know if this is because of RealOne or is there a driver/update i can install?
A: MP3 qualty on realone is not good go to www.palmgear.com and download a trial version of PocketTunes Deluxe you can make your speakers louder and the sound quality is great !
3. Don't know ??
4. Hotsync issues: I'm having difficulty getting consistent hotsyncs for the T3. hotsync's will work initially (first 2 or 3 times) but will stop working. Just wondering if anyone's had this issue.
Try usb 2.0 and make sure your connetion is at Fast As possible.
5. Don't know ??

MP3 sound quality is probably inferior because the Sony handhelds are "Personal Entertainment Organizers", and contain a DSP, which decodes MP3s.
The T3, on the other hand (from what I've learned), makes the processor decode MP3s. The DSP, naturally, is better at the job, making rich sounding MP3s on the NR70V handheld.
I might be wrong on this theory, since someone told me this theory; so please correct me if I am wrong.

I would tend to think you are partially wrong. A CPU could work just as well or better at encoding an MP3. Anything that a DSP chip can do, a CPU can do in software--the CPU would just use more of its power to do so.
(Incidentally, this is also true for Graphics cards. Eventually, CPUs will become so fast that there will be little a GeForce FX 7 or ATI Radeon 9999 can do to help things out, so that market should peter out at some point.)
The 300-400 MHz processors in today's PDAs should have no problem running an excellent MP3 codec. That being said, I do not know which codec the PalmOS RealPlayer uses, nor which codec was implemented by the Sony DSP chip. It could be that one is better than the other, but I wouldn't assume that hardware-based decoding has better quality than a software-based codec.

I just tried pocket tunes and the sound quality is still poor. With the graphic equalizer enabled, I get no bass at all, just distortion. I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?

O.k here is what you need to do, to get your sound improved.
1. Go to PocketTunes > General Preferenes > Volume Boost 6Db (4x is good.
Hope this helps Email me and I may be able to help you more scottoldford@HotPOP.com

Thanks for the suggestion, but I still hear distortion on the bass beats. I don't think i'm a picky person, I just want the same quality as what I had on my clie nr70v.... Is that too much to ask??? ;)

Another question popped up; what is the bitrate of the MP3s?

John,
On your NR70 did you use MP3 format or Sony's Atrac? I've found that the MP3 playback is much more dependent upon bit rate then the ATRAC system and thus adversely effects sound quality.
Also - the Sony has a bass boost that isn't on the T3 as I recall.
Just a thought.

In my old nr70v i was using mp3 files, in fact, i used the exact same mp3's to load onto my sd card. The bit rate on the music is 128 or better. i swapped out the ear buds for some larger headphones and noticed that the bass became less distorted. .. Maybe i was just spoiled with the dsp in the clie. The bass still sounds "hollow" but it's much better than the earbuds. Does anyone notice a difference in sound quality playback when using the T3 (as compared to a discman, mp3 player etc?) It may just be I have a defective unit..... Thanks for all the help guys!

I find with my Tungsten T2 it is not very loud and it is a bit fizzy and also I am a drum player and cannot hear the bass or the kick petal very much with it.
NOT DONE WITH SPELLER OR GRAMMAR !

I have a Sony MD and can state that the T3 doesn't sound as good. I've never been a big MP3'er on the Palms for storage and sound reasons. My Clie's were always better at music then the Palms. And as much as I hate to say this - I got so used to the ATRAC system that the MD was a given when I migrated back to Palm.
There may be better MP3 players out there but when it comes to music - I tend not to get overally creative and spend energy on other things.
I have a Bose stereo system so nothing will sound as good in the compact format of either a Sony, Palm or MD player in my humble opinion.

Fair enough, I guess I just wanted some confirmation that the sound wasn't as good cd quality... in theory though it has the potential to be. the only limiting factors is the hardware used. IMO Palm could have done a better job with that. Oh well. I still love my palm. the only reason i'm using it for music is my md is being serviced now :) I guess I won't complain once I get that back! Thanks again to those who posted replies/suggestions.
