So they steer well clear of the consumer market but license the products to a third party (POS for instance) who may be allowed to customise as the consumer market demands?

Well hello to the Symbian OS 7 netBook !! I assume the third party would have to be a Symbian platinum partner for this to happen (anyone know exactly how much that is?)

I hope it comes to fruition... There may be a future after all.

"...company CEO and president, Norbert Dawalibi... revealed that his company is talking to interested parties about the possibility of a consumer version of its existing Netbook product"

Sorry if I'm being dim, here, but when I first read this Inquirer report, I assumed the 'existing product' being referred to must be the netBook Pro (since the netBook, as I understand it, even if not officially a legacy device, has been out of production for a while now, with only residual retailer stocks available, if at all). A 'consumer version' of a netBook 'Classic'(i.e. EPOC ER5 OS) would, after all, be a, erm, Series 7!

But now you've repeated the 'netBook [period]' nomenclature, John, I'm wondering if we're talking about a remanufactured nB 'Classic' with Symbian7 OS... seems even less likely to me, though almost as wonderful a prospect as a Symbian7 netBook Pro! Can you explain further, albeit hypothetically?

Cheers, Lewis

Ciao Lewis, Ciao John, Ciao all!

IMHO, there is no doubt that the reference *is* to be made to the existing hardware, that is the NETBOOKPRO. Even if there still are several "classic" nB units around, as well as replacement parts, let's consider that the nB classic machine will not be produced anymore.

If we assume the above, we understand that there would be chances for a NETBOOKPRO edition with a different OS than CE.NET

In this context, I do believe we all should focus on supporting the petition initiative and concentrate all the efforts on highlighting PT the advantages of a Symbian OS equipped machine, possibly a Symbian OS v. 7.0 with Series 90 U.I.

This concept is not surely new since it has been often discussed here at
PsionPlace. In the meantime, these emerging rumors may demonstrate that it has never been as much up-to-date as now.

any comments?

It would seem to me that if someone was to consumerise the Netbook Pro they'd just add the missing Apps to the CE version, rather than try to elbow a new OS such as Symbian into it.

I don't know. With Nokia releasing devices such as the 9500 and even the 7700, I would say there is well and truly a consumer market for a Symbian OS nBP (Lewis, I was talking about the Pro!)
Any third party entering into such an agreement with P-T would be mad to restrict themselves to one OS, especially when it has received such bad press so far.

If it was my company, I would definitely be ensuring I had at least the option of going Symbian at some point in the future. Or am I just biased? :p

Not biased, just hopeful! I'm not sure CE does have all that bad a press outside of these discussion groups.
