Hi,

I accidentally posted this in the general discussion area but meant it for here:

I am trying to give up my laptop and migrate to a NetBook for a variety of reasons. One thing I'm looking for in the Epoc/Symbian world is for either a good, easy to use free-form relational database that supports linking between entries and keyword listings for easy retrieval.

In the Windows world a good example of this is: InfoSelect, or Personal KnowBase, or on a Mac: DevonThink.

OR

I'd like to find out if Epoc/Symbian supports a hypertext program like TinderBox or VooDoo Pad which is a wiki web program?
TinderBox is a personal content management assistant that stores your notes in XML and supports dynamic linking to build relationship trees between information. It (and VooDoo Pad can then support weblogs.) This type of software seems like it might be the future of personal knowledge management because it searches its content like a relational database but also is able to support weblogs and social networks.

Is there anything like these out there for Epoc? Could a reasonalby competent person write something like this in OPL?

I hope so!

Thanks,

Being database savy, you might like Kevin Millican's freeware PsiDat. He is still developing it and has an active newly set-up forum. He seems to repsond to feedback and is always happy to take suggestions for how to develop it. PsiDat is up to version 1.25 and has never let me down - it's stable and remarkably versatile (as such databases should be)
PsiDat has relational database features like SQL searches and I have seen it grow in structure and stature very well over the years.
For a freeware product it is excellent - and fully customiseable for most people's needs. I use to to maintain websites, to output reports and as traditonal databases. There is even a version that reliably backs up to CF card. Other people do much more amazing things with it like graphs.
It's on http://www.millican.info

Zim, you shouldn't put a post in more than one place - it is considered bad practice. Perhaps one of the moderators can combine them, and maybe even move them to the "Software" section?

Sorry about that, I wrote my post and submitted it before I realized that I wasn't in the right forum. I tried to delete the other instance of the post, but the system wouldn't let me.

1) http://kgolding.co.uk/psimind.php

hold on... I'll try and see if I can propose something else...

ehm ehm...

...Chris what about a special customized edition of your excellent moving map application?

2) http://www.treepad.com/utils/

again, about Psidat - TreePad converter (PSION-EPOC)
A converter for Psidat (a relational database on the PSION/EPOC handheld computer platform) with import/export routines to/from Treepad 2.x files. Compatible with all TreePad versions. Freeware.

Andy Hayes kindly took some time to explain it to me on this epoc digest number:

I personally found very useful experimenting with this simple yet good example of customization for our beloved data app.

How on earth could a "Moving map" app (such as RealMaps) be used to store
data, except perhaps locations on a map?!?

Ciao Chris,

I was actually referring to your Tube_Route application.

Basically think of something such as a tube map in which you replace the subway lines with different lines of products. Then each single stop is a product itself. in the same chart you have some reference points (in a "real" city map you would have a scale... here you could have a different measure unit).

By following this... ehm... route;) you end up with an organized product chart which can help both members of a sales dept of a determined organization and the customers themselves.

Now think of a database with a few pieces of information and you actually turn a subway stop database into a product database on which you can make your searches.

In my personal case, for instance, I have to deal with many products and such a mechanism can be very helpful in order to assist my memory when on the move during my customer calls.

any comments?

Have you tried PsiMind or NodeMap? They sound far better suited to aiding
memory, and don't require some nasty huge picture taking up space on your Psion.

PsiMind is very easy to use (but maybe too simple for complex relationships),
while NodeMap requires a lot of time to understand how to use it. There may be
other programs like that too.

sorry for possible off-topic, but does anubody know a desktop (PC? Mac?) Wiki-like application, that could import from SQL (e.g. MySQL), i.e. import from web-based Wiki?
