No, pocket internet explorer does not have java support. Netfront, a 3rd party browser has a version with java support;

Is NetFront a nicer browser than pocket internet explorer, and/or are there other good alternatives to pocket internet explorer?

Another 3rd party browser is Thunderhawk which is a combination of sofware and proxy service;

There are also 3rd party add-ons that can enhance built-in browser functionality;
MultiIE

PIEplus

I think they all have trial version.
