In June of last year, PalmSource and Visto Corp. announced they were working together to create a default messaging solution for the Palm OS platform. This application was just introduced at the CTIA conference, which starts today in Atlanta.

Mobile Mail isn't going to be available for consumers to buy. Instead, licensees will have the option of including it on future handhelds and smart phones running Palm OS Cobalt and Garnet.

Though companies like palmOne and Sony have developed email software that they include with their own devices, this is the first time the Palm OS has had a full email application as part of its standard collection of applications available to be bundled with any device.

Mobile Mail 5.0 is designed to provide secure wireless email between Palm Powered devices and both corporate email servers such as Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino and consumer email servers using POP3 and IMAP.

It features over-the-air push email as well as scheduled or user-initiated email synchronization. It includes SSL support and encrypted authentication. Enhanced IMAP folder support allows users to subscribe to up to 16 server folders.

"We are pleased to deliver Mobile Mail 5.0 as the standard platform email client for Palm OS," said David Nagel, president and chief executive officer of PalmSource. "We believe this solution will enable Palm OS licensees, wireless operators, and software developers to quickly and efficiently deploy a variety of Palm Powered products and solutions tailored to the mobile professional."
