My new Toshiba e740 has wireless built-in; unfortunately, I haven't quite figured it all out. Using the AvantGo program within the system, I have had no problem logging on to the 'net through (my USB cradle on) my PC. As a stand-alone device, however, I'm sure I will need to subscribe to some service provider plan for wireless access. Any suggestions? Are any of the providers "better" (i.e. - more reliable, more access points, etc) than the rest?

I plan on using the device while waiting in airports, checking e-mail while on-the-road, etc.

Your guidance is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Pat,

The built in wireless, known as "Wi-Fi" or 802.11b is a short range UHF interface. To use it, you need an "Access Point" that is attached to your network. The access point is a Wi-Fi device that gives wireless devices access to the LAN. You can find them for $100 - $150. My home network has an Access Point, which allows my e740 to access both the web and shared devices on the LAN from anywhere in and around the house.
To connect to the web remotly, like I used to do using my Palm, Minstrel modem and a digital cellular connection, I don't know of an anwer for that requirement using the e740, yet. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. I have also learned that Boingo might prove to be a viable option. They have access points in many major airports and in several large cities. Interesting, however, that there are serious gaps in their coverage; they have access points all over DFW airport, but not a single location at Newark.

I guess I'll live through the development process, but will gladly accept any additional guidance this forum can provide.

Thanks again,
