I am finally finished with my custom mount! I must say I am very satisfied with the result, and it looks much better in real than on the pictures.
It is based on Garmin Auto Kit. I have replaced the speaker with a more powerful one and the antenna is from Gilsson. It is hardwired and there is no loose cables (except for the little one on top), and best of all: Everything can be removed without leaving any visible traces.

That looks really nice - very clean install.
Can you give more specifics on your speaker setup? What is it, how did you wire it in, etc.

Thanks!
This is the speaker I used:

I just pulled out the original and soldered this one to the connectors. It is a lot bigger and sounds way better...

Is your Gilsson antenna mounted outside the car?
If so, how did you get the wire inside your car?

very good.
I have the same car (Passat), and i am also looking for another mounting system than the bean bag.
However in this place my handsfree mobile phone holder is located.

I considered mounting antenna on the roof, but decided to mount it in the rear window since I didn't want to make any holes.
If you have a Passat, you can also get the OEM GPS antenna, wich is a combined GPS/radio antenna and replaces the default radio antenna (no drilling needed), but it costs around €200. Here is a picture of it:

GPSfan,
I am also looking to replace the speaker. What size did you use? How many watt rating etc. Details would be appreciated. Also, does it get as loud as the original.

I don't know how much watts is, only that it is 8ohm (like the original). I took it out of an old radio. It is about 8 cm wide and 4 cm deep and is placed inside the holder. I bought the holder from the Volkswagen dealer.
The sound is much louder (I can now turn down the volume to middle position) and it is much clearer too.

I understand you bought the holder from your VW dealer.
Is it a standard VW accesorie or was it custom made?
If so is there anyway to get the reference number?

The part number for the holder for Passat is 3B1 051 601 C B41. It comes with installation instructions, and it requires no holes/drilling in any visible place.
I paid NOK 1000 for it, very expensive considering it is only a piece of cheap plastic.

That's a lot of money indeed...

How does it look if you go hiking? Do you have to walk with the mount?

The installation looks nice, but is it not uncomfortably low in position? I have my iQue up in level with the dashboard vents, which I think is a convenient position for viewing the map screen.

Part number 1J 0051 507 (google on that if you want to buy it). It is designed to replace the standard VW FM antenna.
