Hi. I'm a college student and just scraped up enough cash for a T3. What are the essential freeware applications? I'm looking for games and productivity stuff. Thanks.

Enjoy, but get your studying done first. I speak from experience.

I'd second that, drbaer. "Games and productivity stuff" our college kid's saying, and I says "someone's got his priorities mixed up". I got my 13 y.o a TE because his closing arguments were "this would help me in my school work". He admitted that
games would be cool too, and like many other kids he's hooked on vid games, but I figured, what the heck, as long as productivity comes first, and lo and behold it does. I see the young rascal writing his projects on the damn PDA (using the Palm IR keyboard) rather than his PC. It beats me why, but who cares.

Going back to xlr8 - there's a lot of freeware out there and a lot is geared to students and managing school work. I saw some good apps in that link.

Thanks for the link! Do you have any suggestions for essential software? Yea, games are good and I've seen some of the student software but I'm really looking for the core applications that most Palm users can't live without. Freeware is better but shareware and commercial software would also be appreciated.

Organizing files, looking up "garbage files" and managing files you invariably will create on an external SD Card will have pretty high ranking.

Utility apps, therefore, seem to "creep in" one at a time til you've got more of them than you know what to do with. Start with Filez listed below, but I'm sure you'll find more you PERSONALLY prefer as time goes on. That's the beauty of Palm!!

On the freeware palm site, I'd look for the following:

1. Colorize (newest is posted) - I suggest a simple change like making your CARET (cursor) BRIGHT RED. People chuckle at me for this, but BOY IT STANDS out in a sea of text when writing.

2. Filez - good bang for buck (although free, it still is BETTER than a lot of commercial apps and lets you look at your saved and unsaved preferences - that will become important to you although not now in the beginning)

3. AlwaysOn - gives more flexibility on "auto off" of your T3.

4. DateDiff - I SWEAR BY THIS THING and it's the reason I may not go for OS6/Cobalt. You need VERSION 3.1 by Robert Watkins (there are several apps that look the same, his is the best).
his direct "dealie" is http://www.foo-bar.org/palmos/

5. PercentTable - great for figuring percentages in table form based on an initial amount (e.g., 246 possible correct answers on an exam, what are the percentage breakdowns of each # of correct answers). Just found that 3 days ago.

6. QuickPhone - enables configurable rapid entry of all the babes' phone numbers without looking like a geek for "too long." - Allows for default area codes and you don't even have to enter a name - they'll go under "1quickphone" until you edit it later (just remember to get one phone number at a time!!)

7. YCal - rather ugly but very functional and small size (8k) year at a glance calendar, which will fill in dates from your to do/datebook, and connect to one of them if you tap a date

8. BigClock - OPINIONS VARY ON THIS ONE, chiefly mine against the rest of the world. I loved it on my M505, but it glitches on my T3. Others haven't had this problem, apparently - so try it. If it sounds an alarm and you shut it off and all the text of your main menu on the launcher (I have mine set for "list," not "icon") goes "warbly" and blurred, then you've got the same problem as me. I've emailed Jens Rupp twice but no response and this app is around 2 years old. If it works for you, it's the best clock app around at any price (it's free) -- period. Tuneable alarms with their own amplitude settings for loudness, and the easierst to configure in terms of wakeup time with other cool stuff too. It's just that darn display glitch. . . . . .

These should get you going. Let us know if you're looking for something more specific - you're on a budget so we won't assail you with too many expensive recommendations off the bat.

REMEMBER that often, freeware apps are MUCH better than some commercial ones - leaner, meaner and almost indispensable.

As for the regulars out there reading this -- AREN'T YOU PROUD OF ME??!! I didn't once mention . . . . . . . . . hee hee hee.

Myyyyyyyyyy prrrrrrrrreciousssssssss . . . . . .

Yes Paul we are proud of you. ;)

xlr8 - What PTL is referring to is a little known  set of programs called "tealpoint". Alas, it's in his name that's why it is his precious.

You can find all of them at www.tealpoint.com.

There are various programs at that site and unfortunately all are commercial. Yet they are all very good so please keep Paul happy and at least check some of them out. They are also shareware so you can try before you buy.

OK, Paul - your precious can come out to play again. :D

Thanks! That sounds like a great start and should keep me busy for a while.

I found HandyShopper, Converter, MMPlayer and purchased PowerOne Finance. I'm very happy with them.

Quickphone!? Now, THAT one sounds promising.

It is funny I do the same thing. I write all my assignments and projects on my palm pilot then convert to my computer and then spell check it do a grammar check and then print it off on my HP 5150 printer (Better printer I have ever hade). I do not know why I right my assignments on my palm pilot ?? Also games are good when you are in school at Recess or Lunch, I take it out and play a game or do something (Amazing my friends at the same time)
