Is it possible to connect Psion 5mx to PC by infrared (connected to USB/COM), or only by infrared modem.
If I set my Psion to infrared connection, my PC recognizes it, but the PsiWin 2.3.3 remains unconnected. The wireless link connection does not work, I can neither send nor receive any data. I use Win2000pro and infrared appliances, with USB (IRDA) or COM plugin. Other handhelds can connect to my PC, only Psion not.
PsiWin can connect only by COM, but if it with infrared connected to COM also works, I don't know.
Is there any way?

PsiWin can only connect via a serial COM port so if you use Infrared, a Virtual IR COM Port must be created and appear in PsiWin Properties so it can be selected.

This works with Windows 95, 98 and ME but Microsoft changed the way IR is implemented in Windows 2000 (and also now with Windows XP) from IrCOMM to IrOBEX. There are one or two patches to create IrCOMM in Win 2000 but many users haven't connected successfully. Have a look at:

This is a German site but the author also has an

I used to use Psiwin via IR - although it wasn't really any faster than cable. If you want to do it, you have to persuade Psiwin to work with the PC IR port. I think this was a config think inside Pswin. The Psion end is simply a 'connect via' IR.

OTOH if you are mainly after a higher speed connection, I'd recommend using a CF card in the Psion and a USB CF reader for your PC (not synching though, just file backups)

I used to use Psiwin via IR - although it wasn't really any faster than cable PsiWin over Infrared is significantly slower than cable. I used a GIrBIL external IR device very successfuly with Win 95 but never managed to use it with Win 98 because it made such a mess of the PC I had to reinstall Win 98 (and it did this with 2 PCs!)

I've just got hold of a (free) file from the C-Pen website which installs IrOBEX protocol on a Psion so I might have a play about with IR file transfers using that, although it is not a solution for running PsiWin over IR. I have transferred files between 5mx and Revo with IrOBEX so next step is to get an IR device for PCs.

I installed the C-pen IROBEX, but on running it I get the message that a folder cannot be found. Also, this seems to kill the IR connection to my Nokia 6210.

Can you help me again Mike?:D

I installed the C-pen IROBEX, but on running it I get the message that a folder cannot be found. I seem to recall this happened when I installed it on "D" drive of my 5mx and I had to re-install to "C" drive.
Also, this seems to kill the IR connection to my Nokia 6210. I don't understand this as I have been using my Nokia 6310 without problems since installing the application, although "C Beam" is not running when I use the phone.

Hi, I'm interested in this IrOBEX for Psion. I've had a look round the c-pen website but can't find it. Could someone give me directions please?

thx

Same for me. I installed it on C, and it (and the link to the 6210) works fine.

I successfully transferred a txt file from my laptop (W2K), but returning it caused the C-Pen program to hang.

Windows Explorer has an option in the "Send to" menu to send to "Infrared Recipient" and this works fine with C Beam receiving the file on the Psion. I cannot, however, find a way to receive a file via IR in Windows, though I may well be mising something blatently obvious :)

I do this routinely as it's the only option I have left at work where Psion is unsupported (in favour of - yeuch - iPaq) and W2k is tied down so I can't install Psiwin.

I have Plbeam installed on my Psion which talks IROBEX to W2k.

When I initiate a file send from my Psion the laptop detects the IR signal and asks me if I want to accept the file from the Psion. I click Yes and it appears on my desktop.

As far as I understand it this is the way IR file transfer should work in W2k and above, so I'm guessing the C-Pen IROBEX program should be detected in the same way. Is your laptop asking you a question? Sometimes when memory is short on the laptop the question gets lost and I have to retry, but I usually get through eventually.

Hope this helps.

I click Yes and it appears on my desktop OK, thanks, I will give that a try tomorrow (or later today now!) but the two PCs that I have installed my USB Infrared device in are actually running Win 98SE.

I bought a Sitecom "CN-100 - USB to Fast Irda adapter", which I installed on my PC running Windows ME. Using this, I have been able to connect my Psions (5mx & Series 7) to my PC via IR, but there is one limitation. You can't just drag & drop files between the Psion and PC via IR, due to the IRObex protocol mentioned before (PCs use this, Psions don't); the only way to copy files between the 2 machines is using PsiWin.

PsiWin works quite well via IR, but you need to be careful with the settings; ie. the speed should be changed from "maximum attainable" to 115K, and I seem to remember having more luck by using the nudge bars to place the "IR serial port" ahead of COM1, COM2 etc. Performing a full backup of my Series 7 via IR was considerably slower than using the cable, but for small file transfers there's no appreciable difference.
