You need "PsiWin" connectivity software. PsiWin 2.3.3 which is the latest version can be downloaded from Psion's website - www.psion.com/downloads/pc/psiwin2/233/english.exe but be aware it is a 25Mb download. Alternatively, you can download psiWin 1.1 from the Series 3 page of my website. This was the original Series 3 version so it will let you connect to transfer files and backup but obviously the file converters are now very old!

The cable for a 3a is not so easy as it is not the same as that used from the 3c onwards. You need the "3Link" and might be able to pick one up on eBay or from the Psion Exchange - www.psionex.co.uk

In terms of where to buy a cable, it would help if you told us your location.

This cable is certainly not something you would easily find in a regular store - almost certainly would have to do mail order from a specialist dealer, and I wouldn't know where to suggest in Italy

In the UK, Mike mentioned Psionex - they are currently quoting 50 UKP for cable only, or 60 UKP with PsiWin. Not much point in paying extra for PsiWin, which is available as a free download.

Pinnock Organiser Services ( http://www.posltd.com ) quoted me 45 UKP.

Of course, there would be international shipping costs on top of this, so it could work out quite expensive.

Alternatively, I know someone who would be prepared to do a private sale from the UK, which would be quite a bit cheaper. Please send me an e-mail or Private Message via PDA Street if you are interested and I will send you the details.

Hope that helps

i downloaded psiwin 2.3.3 from the link mike wrote me - hope it's the right one. do i need also to run the program on the psion? if i do, how can i transfer the program on the psion? - this might be a stupid question, but i ask you because i'm not into the psion thing at all :)

for the private trade first i have ask my father, because actually he's the one who needs the cable

thanks a lot julie

i downloaded psiwin 2.3.3 from the link mike wrote me - hope it's the right one As far as I know it should work although I haven't tried it with a 3a. It works with a Siena which has the same maximum baud rate of 19200 as the 3a, but the 3a does use a different connection cable - the "3Link". If you do have problems once you get the cable, you can always use PsiWin 1.1

PsiWin runs on the PC - you don't install anything on the Psion, although PsiWin will copy some system files across when it first connects.

PsiWin 2.3.3 should be fine with a 3a - it's specifically mentioned in the accompanying readme file:

"On a Series 3a:
- Make sure the 3Link cable is plugged in.
- Move to the System screen, select the 'Remote link' command from the 'Special' menu.
- Set the link to 'On' and the Baud rate to 19200 and press Enter."

:)

There's a first time for everything, Mike! ;) :D

Seriously, I did an emergency backup of a friend's 3a to my system with 2.3.3 and that seemed fine. Certainly didn't have any trouble getting it to connect, so I assumed all was well - didn't do any synching or individual file transfers though.

The 3a connects fine using PsiWin 2.3.3 - I use it frequently to do backups and transfer files. I haven't tried synchronising the 3a though.

Sounds weird. Maybe if we can manage to attach a Compact Flash card into the SSD bay (some customisation is obviously necessary), then we can have cheap abundant memory for our Series3 - and - you may use the CF card to transfer the files to your PC using a USB CF card reader.

I think it sounds great.
