I just got a new Palm M130 and it works great. I took it to work and plugged it in and immediately got a "I detect new hardware" message from the PC and then the Sync function worked fine.

I took it home to my PC and I cannot get my PC to recognize the new hardware. I tried changing ports and changing the Setup to reflect the change in ports but that doesn't help. I tried uninstalling and re-installing the Palm software but that doesn't help either. I know that the Palm equipment works, the handheld, the cradle and the USB plug because I got it all to work when I was at work, but I can't get it to work with my home PC. Any thoughts about how I can get this damn thing to work at home? So frustrating!

Have you tried to go into the Control Panel and access Add New Hardware to see what happens at that point. Simply follow the procedures outlined there.

I have had some situations where the auto detect function hasn't worked, but using that procedure has. It may work; if not, report telling us explicitly what messages you receive during this process.

If you are using Windows XP you need to install the Desktop to account that you have "Administrative Privileges" to.

1. To check if you have administrator privileges in XP, go to Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts. If it doesn't list the type of account under the name of account you use, click on your account and click "Change account type." The next screen should show which type the account is. You may not be able to change this without help from your IT department. The administrator privileges can be removed after installation of Palm Desktop, but they must be added to the user account prior to installation.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for replying...here is some further info.

My Palm software is v 4.1 and my PC is running Windows 98.

I have tried to "Add New Hardware" through Control Panel but when it searches for new hardware, it does not find the Palm which is plugged into the USB port in the back. I have tried rebooting and it still does not "see" it. When go into Device Manager, it tells me that the port "Coms" is working properly.

There has to be a "driver" which is downloaded when I download the Palm software, right? Maybe it is not transferring the driver? Is there somewhere online where I can download this "driver"?

Am I on the right track? Any suggestions would be great. I don't know what else to try!

Do you sync to a network at work?
Is the PDA set up to sync through the cradle?
Go into preferences ON THE PDA, and then connection. Make sure the PDA is set to Cradle/Cable.
Click on "Edit" and confirm that it is set up to sync with your PC and not with your Local Network!
Also is "Local Serial" checked?
I don't think it is the driver. It is more likley a registry problem. More on that is the simle stuff fails!
