Ok folks, I am new here and am not familiar with Garmin. I am an avid digital photographer and really like what Kodak did with their latest digital camera.
A little history:
If you bought the previous version of the camera, 14N, by sending your 14N in to kodak and some $$$, they would upgrade it to the newest model.
Would Garmin do this?

For enough $$$. I'm sure they would. :D
They've been pretty good about providing free updates, I'm not sure about if they will have an upgrade policy. I doubt they would unless it was an admitted lemon.

A few guys have smashed the screens on the iQue or nuked it in 900W microwave ovens for 10 minutes (although Anders told me that 7 minutes should do the job:D). Then, when they return it as faulty, they get the latest hardware in return. A good idea to keep up to date. I must search for my hammer when I get home.
Honey? Where's the microwave oven? In the kitchen you say. Where's that? Ok! I found it, but it's full of water. Oh! Now you tell me, that's the kettle, is it? What the heck does that do?

That is some bullet proof customer service! Well, as long as Garmin does not forget about the 3600 users....I say kudos to them.
I own both Nikon and Canon digital and I tell ya, the customer service between the two is like night and day.

IMO, for point and shoots, they are close. I think I would have to try them both to see. I like Canon's DIGIC processing, but Nikon seems to do a great job with Sony chips. For me it would come down to options and workflow. I like to have TOTAL control over my pictures. I was going to buy the 4500 for the wife, but Sears was blowing out the S85 for $299. I couldn't resist.
I came from owning a Sony S85(wife's cam), 707(1.5yrs then sent back) then 717(8 months then sent back).
Now I own a D100 w/various lenses, owned the D2h for about a month (sent it back) and now also own a Canon 1D.
If I were to go entry level into a DSLR, I would go for the D70.
If I were to go pro level, I would get the new Canon MKII.
I shoot interiors and such for my side job. You can see it here:

stevevo,
If your asking about customer service, Cannon has a much better reputation.

It's the spelling police! :D Where were you when I copied it from Stevevo?
Yes Canon is great, when you shoot someone with a cannon, you don't get a second chance. :D

I have the Canon S230, Nikon 5400. Nikon F and several Canon point-and-shoots. Nikon used to rule the film camera world, but Canon seems to have the upper hand in digitals, with both pix quality and fit and finish. It's close, but I think Canon has the upper hand.

Yeah they will fight up and down, but Canon really does produce some nice pics with the pro models using the CMOS sensor. I saw a first hand comparison at a photo store between the CCD and CMOS sensor doing a light test. CCD's suffer from blooming while CMOS does not. Plus CMOS uses lower power than the CCD resulting in longer batter life.
The thing that sold me on Canon over Nikon...The D2h has a new battery system, new ac adapter for sensor cleaning and new flash.
The new Canon MKII uses the same batter as the Canon 1D, includes the a/c adapter that is used to clean the sensor as everything that fit on your Canon 1D also works with the MKII (Flash, plugs, cables, etc...)
So for a serious photographer, it costs less to upgrade from a 1D to a MKII than it does from a Nikon D1H to a Nikon D2H.
Again, this is just my opinion, but I think Canon did a great step by being able to reuse the the older accessories.
To not get too off track....kinda like the Palm Universal Plug ;)

There is a precedent...
I bought a Garmin II+ GPS in early 1998. A year later they offered an upgrade which brought in a new generation ROM *and* a US city database, which is what interested me. The upgrade consisted of shipping the unit back to Olathe then receiving back what looked like a new unit (including box, manual, etc.). The cost was $99.
Just a guess, but if Garmin were to offer a significant upgrade to the iQue, it might run between $100 and $200.

300mm!!!! Prime? Oh...nice shot! Dont get me wrong. I LOVE my D100 and use it ALL of the time. Just for my "jobs" now I use the Canon which is sitting in its bag most of the time.
The D70 is the catsa** of DSLR's now. The D2h still needs work IMO. Right now, I would rather get 2 D70's instead of 1 D2h.
:D

Back this past November I bought a Canon EOS 300D Digital Rebel. Fantastic 6.3 megapixel Digital SLR camera for about $1000 (which is about all I could afford at the time, otherwise I would have bought an EOS 10D!).

Go for the 1D, trust me. Megapix are not everything. 1d 4mp = 10d/300d 6mp. It has less of anti-aliasing filter allowing for more detail. I dont want to keep this thread OT, so you can shoot me a message at

or stop over at dpreview.com - David(r00t)

Thanks! the good news is that's no prime, it's the dirrt cheap bad reputation laughed at by snobs (who care more about spec than results) Nikon 70-300G (yes, G)
I use my real name over at dpreview, here's the thread where I posted that pic and it's blurry brother:
F1 photos at dpreview (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1034&message=8394688)
There's more F1 testing in 2 weeks, I'll be there!
