Hi,

I've just joined this forum and am looking for some advice. I have a NB and have just bought a Buffalo Aistation so that I can connect to my PC network and access the internet via my adsl connection. I already have a 802.11g lan working.

When I plug the Airstation card into my netbook I do not get a power light. I haven't tried it in a PC Notebook yet to discover if it is a faulty card or not but does anyone have any ideas on the subject?

Thanks,

John Stretch

John,
The netBook does not supply power to the card until it is needed. When you launch Opera, etc you are asked how you want to connect, only then will it power up the card.

Hope this helps.

...unfortunately, John, when you do launch Opera or Mail (or any other app using an internet connection) and attempt to connect to a network, it still won't work - I'm afraid the nB doesn't support the CardBus & 802.11g standards; it's 16-bit PCMCIA & 802.11b only.

The generally recommended best-buy is the Buffalo WLI-PCM-L11GP-3 - it has very low-power consumption, a Lucent Hermes chipset (which the useful NetStatRF utility requires) and is super-slim (doesn't foul the stylus) and comes as cheap as GBP34.00.

Lewis,

Thanks for the reply. My router/modem is set up to operate in 802.11g and b. When I access the router from my pc I can see that the MAC address of the Airstation in my NetBook is shown in the Client list so something must be working.

I just can't connect to the internet from the book.

Any more ideas?

John

Welcome to Psion Place!

I think we need to know exactly which model of WiFi card you have got for the netBook before we can get to the bottom of this. I, for one, am a little confused.

The Airstation that I am using is the slim one that doesn't obstruct the stylus. It is a WLI-PCM-L11GP.

Although the MAC address appears when I access the router from my desktop the Host Name does not appear. It does appear for another pc on the same network.

Thanks for the help so far.

John

You might find the following thread useful as it deals with this type of frustration:
http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36001&highlight=static+address

In short, it might cause you to try static IP addresses to get things working as you want them to. For some people DHCP works (and should work) great, without problems. For others (including me) it was a case of "at least this works finally".
Just worth suggesting now other things don't seem to be working correctly.

Just another thought - are you using encryption and if so, is it perhaps getting in the way or needing tweaking in its settings?

I need to move these posts to a topic of their own in the WiFi forum, and we'll continue to troubleshoot the problem from there! :)

Good luck, John, and welcome to Psion Place - you haven't just got the best sub-notebook going, but an excellent WiFi card - I have the same one, too, and it works a treat! :)

I am now communicating with the router/modem as my Netbook appears in the LAN > DHCP Client List. Also when I attempt to find an internet page using Opera, NetStatRF indicates that I am connected to ESS and has the correct SSID but also says that I am not connected to a network.

It seems I have connection but can't get web access.

John,
Could you list briefly the things you've already tried here, then we can perhaps try to fathom out your problem:
In particular, have youverfied the encryption is set correctly?
It does certainly seem that the IP bit is OK, so we perhaps need to consider something above that.

George,

I have set up ethernet using New Connection, Standard Settings, DHCP, Lucent WaveLAN / Orinoco Xard with no encription.

When I try to open a web page the power light comes on and the data light flashes intermittently. Eventually I get the message that the remote server can't be found.

I would just love to have wireless net access from my NB. I have had every Psion since the series 2 (the only machine to fail the Y2K test.

Hope you can help.

George,

During the attempt to connect to a website the NetStatRF programme shows the following before disconnecting:-

Tx unicast frames/bytes 5/1820

Rx unicast frames/bytes 30/5280

The previous four posts have been moved here from their original location in order to keep everything relating to your particular issue in one thread. This makes it easier for others to understand your problem and hopefully help to solve it!

Do you have a DNS server identified?
I have the router address (10.0.0.2) specified as the Default gateway:
Mine other settings are:
Ethernet Settings:
802_Lucent
Manual config (IP 10.0.0.7)
Primary DNS same as router (10.0.0.2)
Secondary DNS 212.4.208.100
(this is my ISP's DNS I think)

This thread is a bit ancient, but I'm having the exact same problems....the thread doesn't show any kind of resolution? Anyone got any clues?

I can't hlep thinking this may be a "router side" issue.....

Cracked it....typing this on my Netbook while connected wirelessly! I tried removing the encryption totally, and that worked. I've now enabled the lowest level of WEP encryption and it's working too...so I have some (if limited) protection. I might have a go at controling access via MAC addresses....don't want to spoil at good thing though!!

It all works rather well.....all I need is "Real Player" for the Netbook so I can listen to Radio 4 whenever I want (Ok....in sad dream world now..can't help it.)

64bit WEP is universal, but 128bit WEP varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. My Lucent chipset Avaya card refused to talk to a BT 2100 router with 128bit enabled, but was fine with 64bit.
