Every time I try to legally BUY a music file (wma or mp3) from Napster or Buy.com or Musicmatch - and try to download it to my Ipaq through WMP 9 - I am unable to... there is an unknown error. When I drag the file into mobile device using explorer it does transfer - but it says "the license for this file cannot be found. use windows media player on your pc to copy the file to your device again" when I try to play it...

When I download wma or mp3 files through file sharing - or when I make wmas from someone CD - NO PROBLEM!!!!! Everything transfers and plays JUST FINE on my ipaq...

The people at Napster and Buy.com have no idea what im talking about when i try to explain this to them..

It sucks that when you actually TRY to be good and PAY FOR THE FILES... you get screwed and end up spending an hour on the web looking for solutions... THIS has NEVER worked for me...

Any suggestions????

That is the copy control on the file. I think there is a way to copy the license to your iPAQ but i forget how. Try, as an experminet, re encoding the MP3 files with a program like DBPowerAMP. That shoule remove the copy protection.

Tranfering through wmp 9 automaticaly tranfers the licens with it. As far as the wmp tranfer error, you'll have to contact microsoft for that one.

Make sure you have the latest version of media player for your pocket pc and fro the desktop computer. Also make sure that you have the latest version of activesync.

Yeah everything is the latest - Active Sync 3.71 and WMP 9... i'll check with MS - I haven't seen them address this at all though - but i'll try again

Remember that bowing to the whims of the all-powerful RIAA does not equal "good".
