Hi all

On the 6th of April i went to the wlan in London specifically to see the netbook pro.

The machine was at the time being demonstrate to a customer with gprs and Internet connection and i must say it was very fast and easy to operate.

After the demo was over i had a play with nbpro for a while and i must say it does not feel as nice as my old nb.

But the screen and the speed of the connection were very good.

When i asked the representative’s of pt about having the epoc operating system on the nbpro i was given a funy look as to say please do not waste our time!

I left the show a bit disappointed but happy in the knowledge that my trusty old nb was waiting for me at home.

Cheers

Thanks Psionino for sharing your experience with us. It is a shame the 'don't waste our time' look was so obvious when you mentioned EPOC - but perhaps only to be expected. The techies you met were probably well versed in CE.net and thing$ of that ilk. It is certain that they had no deep experience of EPOC themselves, otherwise they would have at least had some respect for the stability and functionality of our beloved OS.
Your disappointment mirrors the feelings of many forum members, who still cannot quite accept that EPOC is gone. One would expect screen and connection speed to be better in a newer device - and if the NB EPOC was ever still being developed, I am sure that by now it would boast improvements in both - sadly a question of what might have been.
It seems also that software and peripheral support has also abandoned EPOC. Those of us still soldiering on as long as we can with our EPOC devices at least can be safe in the knowledge that we are getting value for money.
I wonder whether, in two years time, we shall finally have fully accepted the NBPro into our community alongside the NBClassic - or whether we shall be still making use of our EPOC devices, waiting for a worthy replacement to appear.
Plenty of other threads talk about the ideal successor to the 5MX and NB - sadly it seems that several come close but none match them as yet.
All quiet as well about the rumoured revitalised model by POSLtd.
Has anyone else seen any adverts for the NBPro - perhaps in business publications etc? Is the marketing of this product very visible - or does it not need to be as such.
One final point - the NBPro seems to be geared towards being a useful device in combination with other services (GPRS, LAN server etc). This differs from what the NB (and 3/5/7 series) offer by being useful without the addition of other services. A different spectrum indeed.

I feel that given the fact that PT have fired this at the corporate market, WinCE is more suited, as it provides better compatibility with Mission Critical applications that they use on their Windows based PCs.

Can't agree less with this. It is the lack of corporate knowledge of anything outside the box. I am sure that Symbian OS7 with a port of Opera would run all ASP.net websites and Citrix. Also, it is easy to develope Java applications that can integrate and run on the desktop environment.

The netBook Pro is designed to be powerfull enough to run local applications and networked apps including client server databases. Nothing that Symbian OS7 isn't entirely suited to - faster and more stable than Windows CE. OH, and symbian is by far the more mature OS!

What prevents PT from launching a Symbian OS7 version it perhaps the knowledge that the target corporate audience will not understand this, they can't think out of the MS box. Perhaps Linux would be the only understood alternative.
