Does anyone use a Psion Netbook (or other models) to access the web both in the USA and abroad? If so please can you advise as to your ISP and their monthly charge. Ideally, please also include the countries you have successfully accessed the web from. I suppose the way to go is to use a Tri Band phone and so I would be interested in hearing how well this set up works (is it an expensive option?!!).

The reason I ask is that simply I am trying to find a reasonable cost US ISP that also is good for other countries as I intend travelling internationally (e.g. China, India, Taiwan, South Africa etc). My current ISP is Juno which is not a true dial up service (it's a proprietry system like AOL) and so have not been able to use my Psion in the USA with this company.

Many thanks,

Grant

Hello Grant,

I personally use Earthlink the most with my Psion. The cost is 21.95 a month for unlimited dialup. They also have international numbers that can be used abroad but I believe that there is some per minute cost associated with international calls.

When I am in the North of Ireland, I will connect to the Internet through CompuServe Classic (NOT CompuServe 2000). I pay just under $10 a month for CompuServe Classic but I believe that that only gives me five hours of connect time per month, which I never reach if I am only collecting email.

I have signed up for and used a local free ISP in Ireland. It worked quite well and that is what I will probably use when I next travel there.

South and Central Asia are different places than the North of Ireland so you may not be able to use the same options. If I recall correctly, CompuServe Classic is accessible from many different places world wide but specifically where those places are, I do not know.

The other thing is that if you are looking for the cheapest option, don’t use a mobile, unless you subscribe to a local mobile service in each country you visit. Making calls on a US mobile service from abroad can cost upwards of $3 to $4 a minute for local calls (if you are calling out of the country you need to add a few more dollars a minute for international long distance). You also can not be guarantied that the Data service required for connecting to the net will be available through the roaming agreements in each country you visit.

A landline modem is almost sure to work as long as you have the right plug adapters.

Hello Grant,
In the US I use Bamnet for access as I have a cable modem and no ability to connect away from my home. It's .065 per minute only when you use it. Check www.bamnet.net. When outside the US I try to find internet cafes and check mail on my hotmail address.
Good luck
Terry

Thank you both for your input. By the way (as posted elsewhere) there's a free ISP in the UK I used successfuly on my recent visit called "ecosse". Run a search on this and you should be able to get the access information. Why can't someone provide a similar service in the USA?!

Although it doesn't cover my international requirements I have just found a dial up ISP for only $5.95 per month. They have over 2,000 access numbers in the USA and it's very straight forward to set up.

So if you want a cheap (no banner advertising either!) alternative try:
