saving default network service under OS5

I set up lots of palms. It includes setting up network services and connections and selecting the default (current) service. I've installed ConnectionMgrDB and NewtworkDB under OS4 and it worked like a charm, under OS5 I still can restore connections (ConnectionMgr50DB) and network services, but I cannot understand behavior of the default service setting at all. Service that was default at the time of sync usually is not restored. It is defined in networkDB somehow, when I change it, default service is changed as well and it is permanent, so I change NetworkDB until I have the desired result, but I'd like a better method. All installations are done after the hard reset, so this erratic behavior cannot be caused by old settings. I suspect NetPrefs has something to do with it, but it is normally locked and requires up-reset to unlock - too much fuss. Any ideas?
