Hi everyone.

After years of being a dedicated 5 owner and it "finally" giving up the ghost I dived into hunting for a Netbook. I thought I'd never find one knowing that they had stopped being made (and I don't want a NB Pro CE powered brick!)

Thankfully I came across you guys here which made me aware of the Malay Books and to cut a long story short mine arrived from Malaysia yesterday.

I'm over the moon playing with my new 5 replacement, chucking all my old data and contacts over to it and having colour is amazing!!

I can definately see the laptop being dumped permanatly now.

I do have a few of questions I hope you can help with though.

#1. Do you know if the Nokia D211 combined GPRS and 802.11 card works with the Netbook ?

#2. Has anyone used a NB with a Cisco 340 to access a locustworld (http://www.locustworld.com) based mesh as I can't get it working here ?

#3 What's those killer apps I should be running on my new NB ?

Thanks everyone :)

Jason

Hi Jason

Congrats on joining the netBook community, and welcome to Psion Place!

Apologies for silence - I've been away for a few days and am just now trying to catch up. I think the title of your thread may be the reason for lack of response - I'm not familiar with the Nokia card you mention, and don't know whether anyone else will be, but I rather suspect that it will not be compatible with the netBook. Suitable GPRS cards are somewhat thin on the ground as far as I know - the Option Globetrotter is the one I have generally heard to be recommended.

The Cisco 340 certainly is compatible for wireless access, but I don't know anything about LocustWorld.

It might be an idea to break your questions up into different posts - the first two might do better to be in the WiFi or Internet areas. As for the third, a general question in the netBook forum will, I'm sure, bring a response - our members do normally like to join in with recommendations of their favourite apps!

Look forward to hearing more from you.

Julie

Thanks Julie, you just beat me to it!

Welcome Jason,

Let me try to address some of your questions I do apologize for the length of this reply:

1.There is a list of devices that are supported by the netBook (or Malaybook) I do not believe the Nokia card you are referencing to is supported.

2.Here is a link to an excellent site that gives an overview of supported devices:
http://www.isbg00598.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/faqNetworks.htm#wireless
maybe this helps.

Here are some other links:

http://staff.washington.edu/dushaw/psion/netbook.html
http://www.jag.me.uk/misc/netbook/index.htm

2. Could you be a little more specific in what does not work. I have a Avaya Silver card I use with both MalayBook and netBook and they work like a dream, at home, in the office and on the road at hotspots.
I did notice that the top banner on that specific site is Macromedia Flash and that is not supported (see the thread that I started a little while ago at http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=41166). If there is anything else you are referring to let me know I’ll be happy to test it.

Hi Jason,
Welcome to PsionPlace. For some reason I missed your first post. I think it is because it had the D211 in the titile of the thread and I haven't a clue about this so I ignored it - sorry.

I echo Julie and John's information and, as you can see, there are apps to do most things needed.
In addition to the 'killer apps' mentioned already here are some other suggetsions:

nightkeys (www.neuon.com) - an on-screen keyboard, useful when you can't use the keyboard for some reason, eg in the dark!

epocsync (www.freepoc.org) - Since you have another Psion, you can 'sych' them by IR.

RMR Text (www.rmrsoft.com) - A text reader.
There are, as perhaps you know, lots of eBook readers available also

PhoneManPro (www.zenobyte.com) - seems to work with my (ericsson r520m & nokia 3210) phones more reliably than the built in Email prog.

Psion Commander (www.golder.de) - A file management utility that comes into its own on the Netbook, with one of the best (but lingering) About screens I've seen on EPOC.

Macro5 (www.pnicolas.epocboulevard.com) - Works greaat even just as a cliptext manager for the Netbook.

FastBackup (www.freepoc.org) - A backup utility to CF Card that does the job. There is now a synch feature in this, that might be of use to you if you run a 5 or 5MX and a Netbook like me. NB I only need to use FastBackup on my Netbook - I manually beam or copy changes I make on my smaller Pison. See the threads on Fastbackup for more info.

Of course, THIS forum has been indespensible as a source for information.

I think, at thew time of writing, everything I have mentioned is free to download and use. This has been another advantage of EPOC - well-rounded and developed software that has been generously shared with the community.

Have fun with your big Psion and let us know how you get on.
George:)

Hi,

Welcome to the NB community mate! I'm sure you'll find all the enjoyment of the Series 5 on the NB and more!! Anyway, on the GPRS card thingie, I'm sure the Pretec CF GPRS card works on the Netbook. Hope this helps..
