The other day, I opened up my S320 to get a look at its broken power stud (see this thread: http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3627). During the procedure, the unit became activated and I saw the cylindrical Palm logo on the screen, as one would see during the first activation of the device. This happened a few times (I had to keep testing my ability to hit the internal power button) and then I saw a message that said something like:

Completely clear memory?
Hit "up" button for Yes.
Hit any other button for No.

Naturally, I hit a different button. This happened at least twice. Finally, my exploration complete, I closed the unit and hit a function button. To my extreme dismay, nothing happened. I reopened the unit and saw no damage, smelled no melting circuitry. No button pushes did any good. I figured I had made things worse and broken the device for good.

Later, on a whim, I plugged the S320 into its recharging cable and was rewarded with the start-up screen. The Palm was back, but had suffered a complete memory wipe. The battery retained its charge through all this.

Since I have yet to repair the power stud, I'll need to do this again. Does anyone know what might have caused this blackout, so I can avoid it next time? I did hit numerous buttons, including the reset switch after the device became unresponsive, but I assume it wasn't accepting input at that time.

Oh, by the way, the reason the power stud no longer works is because it's designed to pivot on two tiny knobs. At least, I assume they're tiny because they have both broken off my power stud and I didn't even find them inside the PDA. Strange for such a high-tech device to have such a weak point in its design.
