Recently, on opening "Word" via the icon on the screen, I get the following messages:
Program closed
Program Word
Reason code Word
Reason number 1
I cannot find a list of error codes in the manual, or on the Psion website. I did a full reset, Word opened correctly. Then restored backed up data, Word now errors. I.ve not loaded any new programs recently, can anyone suggest what's gone wrong please?

You could always try removing the word.ini file located in C:\system\apps\word and then try the application again. This resets the application to default settings.
If Word starts working again, try loading each of your word files to ensure one of them is not corrupt.

alternatively, try deleting the file 'Word' in your Documents folder. This is the temporary file Word creates when you open a new file, and it may contain some corruption that is causing the crash.

Thanks for prompt reply: but no difference after removing the ini file, and I have no "Word" file present in my Documents folder. Any other thoughts?

Hold down the Function key and press the Word silkscreen button to create a new Word document. If it lets you do this and Word loads then you have a corrupt file somewhere.

Have you tried double tapping on other word docs? Do you have any similar problems with other programs?
Without sounding too nosey, what other applications or .sis files have you installed. What space do you have left on your C:drive when all other applications are closed.

With Func/Word, still errors the same. Spare memory is 10+Mb. No new programs loaded in the last 6 months.... Got various progs such as "Bridge" card game, "File Switch", "Autoroute" but all has worked harmoniously for months.

Well we know that the problem is file-related since everything worked after a recet but started failing again after you restored your data. One or more files on your Psion must be corrupt but which it is may be tricky to track down.
Do you have a CF card installed? If so remove it and try Function+Word then. Do you have any custom templates? If so (after making sure you have a backup) try deleting them and then see what happens. Does your system\install directory contain sis files for applications that you no longer have installed? Try deleting your system\templates\word\normal file and then see what happens.
We'll get there in the end!

I DO love an optimist! Had 32Mb CF card in with Bridge, Route Planner on it. Removed it, Func+Word still errors same. No custom templates installed. In System, no folder named "templates", System/Apps/Word opened shows no template files. No install files except what I'd expect. But I'm not downhearted....

Okay, it sounds a bit fishy that there is no standard document template (the Normal file). Can you please try this ... Go to the c:\system\ directory. Create a directory called Templates. In this new directory create one called Word and in this directory create a new Word file called Normal (Ctrl+N or use the File menu). Creating this file should also open Word which might now work.

OK. Created System\Templates\Word, Ctr+N, tried to name Word file as "Normal", hit enter and error returned. Is it possible to corrupt the ROM?

On a 5mx or MC218 it is not possible to corrupt the ROM and this has been proven by, "I did a full reset, Word opened correctly. Then restored backed up data, Word now errors." in your original post.
My next suggestion is that you perform another hard reset and then manually copy over your data from your backup folders and re-install each of your third party applications. This will be slow and tedious but it will allow you to both control what is going onto your Psion and it will also allow you to track down the problem if you open Word each time you have restored some data.

HOOORAY!!!!! Manual entry with "test" files opened between each restore - got to "test" 13 before errors returned after restore of System\Apps\Word. Hard reset again, reloaded everything except Apps\word, all now seems ok. Thanks for the very quick and helpful advice.

You see, I told you that we'd get there in the end! :)
Out of interest, what files were in System\Apps\Word? Was it just the word.ini file?

Yes, it was just the win.ini file. thanks again.
