One week after puchasing my much beloved e740, I watched (in what seemed to be slow motion) it slip out of my hands and onto a tile floor, cracking the screen.
Any idea how much this is going to cost me to get fixed?

Might seem like a dumb solution to your problem, but if you did just buy it a week ago, you might be protected. IF you bought it using a credit card through a store, SOME credit cards protect against breaking for 90 days. CHECK W/ YOUR CREDIT CARD!
That's probably the cheapest way to do it. I'm sure there are websites that tell you how to replace your screen, but try replacement first.
Good luck!
Brilliant idea (I feel dumb for not having thought of that).
It was in fact purchased with a credit card that has purchase protection for breakage.
Still, any other information would be appreciated in case the credit card angle doesn't pan out (I'm alway skeptical when dealing with a bank that there's a loophole).

I can help here, I recently replaced my toshiba e740 screen with one from a toshiba e310 (they are identical, and you can get these cheap second hand)
I would opt to do this, because toshiba will charge a huge
amount for labour, and the work isnt too difficult
to do yourself.
If you want more details about how to do this,
I can email you directly or post more info on
the group.
Peter.
For anyone interested (in case you run into this), the repair cost about $350CDN ($225US):
$250 for the screen ($160US) and $100 for labour ($65US). Their hourly rate for labour was $65/hour ($41US)
