After hours and hours trying to set up my iPAQ to connect to O2's GPRS network through my Nokia 6310i I discovered O2 don't support PPC2003 wich is why none of the documentation or automatic setup software on their site works. Doh!

However, 25 minutes on the telephone to one very bright Ismail Suhail who reeled off (from memory, I hasten to add) all the settings I needed and hey presto - it worked first time. Top man, Ismail.

So, as there are no doubt countless others desperately trying the same thing I thought I should share this information as it would have helped me no-end and saved me a fortune at O2's 25p per minute call costs. This is how it works:

To add a data account on a Nokia

On the menu system scroll to Settings
Select GPRS Modem Setup
Select Active Access point and activate an access point
Select Edit Active Access point and enter a name (alias)
Select GPRS Access Pointand enter mobile.o2.co.uk

Power on the PDA
Select the START button
Tap Settings
Tap Connections
Tap the Connections icon
Tap New...
Enter a connection Name (for example, Mobile web)
From the pull-down menu select Generic IR Modem for infrared, Hayes compatible modem on COM1: for cable/data card or Bluetooth modem for a Bluetooth connection
Set the Baud Rate at 57600
Tap the ADVANCED button
Select the Port Settings tab and check the following settings:

Insert the alt-DNS IP address as 193.113.200.201
Leave the WINS and Alt WINS addresses BLANK
Select OK
Select NEXT
Enter the following dial-up number dependant on handset, and leave all other fields blank:
*99# (Motorola, Nokia)

*99***CID# (Ericsson, Siemens) (the CID is the number identifying the data profile to be used to connect)

Select NEXT
Un-tick: Wait for dial tone before dialling
Tick: Cancel if not connected within 120 seconds
Leave the other boxes empty

NOTE: If you need to specify the dial string, for example with 7650, use:

at+cgdcont=1,"IP","MOBILE.O2.CO.UK"

Tap Finish
Tap Connections
Select your newly created connection
Tap Dialling Options
Tap Dialling Patterns
Enter the following:

For Local calls dial G
For Long distance calls dial G
For International calls dial G
Tap OK twice
Enter the Username as web
Enter the Password as password
Ensure that IrDA or Bluetooth is enabled on the handset or the cable is connected, then tap CONNECT
Once connected tap the Start button icon in the top left corner of the display and then tap Internet Explorer to browse

Enjoy :)
