I haven't seen the tungstens for sale, but the nx70vs started shipping out a few days ago. Really cool. The tungsten w runs 4.1.1 and the other run 5.0. OldBlue 10-29-2002, 11:03 PM The new Palms were released for sale yesterday, although none of the retail stores I visited knew anything about them! (Staples, Circuit City, BestBuy, and Office Depot) Several people have posted on these boards that they have purchased their Tungstens at retail stores. I recall reading "Staples" on more than one post. I phoned Palm this morning and ordered mine through them. They have a promotion currently for free overnight shipping. I received my order confirmation and FedEx tracking number by email today. I will have my Tungsten T sometime tomorrow. OldBlue djmangen 10-30-2002, 07:15 AM Be advised that you will not be able to upgrade the operating system for older (i.e., M515, M500, etc.) devices to the new 5.0 operating system. DrMud 10-30-2002, 08:13 AM Just a brief reinforcement of what djmangen has already correctly stated: there will be no upgrading of the older Palms with the DragonBall processors, to OS 5. I think we will see some upgrades made available for the DragonBall units to the newer versions of the OS 4.X. I am looking forward to OldBlue posting use the details of his first exposure to his new T. Vicarious thrills please OldBlue! Doc PDASROCK 10-30-2002, 11:08 AM Yes, drmud, I think they will probably release new os 4.x versions, especially considering they are still making units with 4.1.1 (tungsten w). Also the fact that they jumped straight to 5.0 rather than 4.5 or something might indicate they are still working on new versions of it, or plan to in the future. Are you thinking of getting one for yourself doc? Cheers little-man 10-30-2002, 12:15 PM One OS 5 PDA that PDASROCK forgot to mention is the Sony NX-60. basically an NX-70v without the camera. DrMud 10-30-2002, 01:10 PM As regards a new OS 5 Unit....well the techno bug has been pulling on my wallet but I'll wait. My best excuse for not going to a Tungsten T is my m515 sets on an Omnisky modem. I Love the service. And I have 7 more months left on my annual contract. AN even though I have not held a T in my hand or put it in my pocket, I think it weighs a lot! Doc PDASROCK 10-30-2002, 02:17 PM Yeah, the techno bug is everywhere, huh? About the tungstens, I really don't know. On one hand they are pretty well connected, with bluetooth and all, and alos rather small, but on the other hand, I think I would WAY rather have an nx70v for my purposes. We'll see, cheers P.S. I think the tech bug was pulling on my wallet, then it realised-"Hey, I've got no money anyhow", and then it left me alone.:D pdcparamedic 10-30-2002, 02:24 PM Ok, so, even though my palm 515 is a week old, I will not be able to upgrade to 5.0 OS? Will there be upgrades for my 515 that will improve the monitor face, ie, more clarity in the icons, pictures, etc.? pdc djmangen 10-30-2002, 02:40 PM Originally posted by pdcparamedic Will there be upgrades for my 515 that will improve the monitor face, ie, more clarity in the icons, pictures, etc.? pdc While it is of course dangerous to speculate too much, I doubt that improvements to screen clarity and the like will be seen with the M515. I doubt that they could transition to a hi-res screen, which is what you'd probably need to improve clarity, pictures, etc. Sorry, but.... PDASROCK 10-30-2002, 03:07 PM Well, as far as os is concerned, you will never be able to get to 5.0. On the other hand, there must be 10x as many palm pdas using 3.5 or 4.1 than 5.0, so I really think they will come out with an os 4.5 or something. Screen resolution would be difficult to change, although probably quite possible. It would be easier to get a new unit than upgrade that sort of stuff. OldBlue 10-30-2002, 10:42 PM My Tungsten arrived today and I'm in love already! I still have to load the PC software and install all the applications I had on my m505. Several apps were on my SD card and when I moved the card over to the Tungsten, the apps fired up without any problem. Examples are SplashPhoto (I was showing the family albums to any co-workers who would watch and had not yet fallen asleep), BigClock, Palmscape, CityTime, several games and utilities. The only app that crashed was Mapopolis, but I may just need to do a clean install. Also, I read on the Mapopolis web site that they have released a version for OS5 to make use of the ARM processor. ... Anyway, yadda, yadda, yadda, ... It's a nice PDA and a big improvement over my m505. OldBlue TheSpies 10-30-2002, 11:04 PM you could not change the resolution. at least not to a better one, a worse one is possible. its a matter of the way the screen is made and how many pixels. i doubt there will be an os 4.5, if some new bug was discovered that was suddenly causing a significant amount of problems they would probably issue a patch though. since they put 4.1.1 on their new tungsten smartphone i would say they figure that is good enough for anything with a dragonball in it. PDASROCK 10-31-2002, 12:07 AM True, true. I meant if they actually replaced the screen, obviously you couldn't get better resolution with the same screen. I would think though, with some difficulty, that you could get a new screen and flash to a hi-res os or whtever, but it just wouldn't be worth all the trouble. You're probably right about the os 4.5 thing, although with the number of units currently using it, they might do it anyway. DrMud 10-31-2002, 08:47 AM Come on! If people can split hairs, surely Palm can develope software patches to split pixels! :D Doc PDASROCK 10-31-2002, 10:43 AM Yeah:D . "The new: OS 4.1.1.1! Get that 1200x1200 like resolution you've been waiting for! Your average pixel split 6 ways by a strange and unknown phenomonen!" Heh, maybe God should make pdas:p .... little-man 10-31-2002, 11:23 AM ben, you're making a fool of yourself. snap out of it. PDA Street
