I reviewed the posts on this forum and from what I can tell the Psion Gold card is the only one that is compatible for wired ethernet and modem use. What I need to do is dial up my ISP for email, which I am already doing, and ping other devices over TCP/IP for work related stuff. I think this card is still available from Psion on a special order basis but is there another option. I currenty have a 7 but am expecting my Nebook upgrade from Expansas tomorrow.

Thanks in advance.

I'm moving your thread to the 7Book forum, as I think it will be the most relevant to your machine, since you're about to do the upgrade, and also where you are most likely to find answers to your query.

Vince,

There are other modem/Lan cards on the market. I was looking at the 3com megahertz offering which came in under the (possible) 300mA 7 series limit. At the same time though I had the option of buying a Psion CombineIT 56k 10/100Lan card and as these are definitely compatible (subject to the pccard hardware upgrade - see seperate thread) I went for that.

The main thing you need to consider is drivers. Although alot of wired modem/LAN cards can now run on the reduced power supplied by the 7book, this will not guarantee success as the drivers could be completely different to that of the Psion cards. If you have any friends with laptops, it may be wise to try their cards before buying. There are reports that the Megahertz modem card worked with the 7 so maybe the combined modem/LAN will aswell. If you do buy a non Psion card, make sure you have the option to return it.

If you definitely want a Psion card, keep an eye on Ebay as they tend to appear on here quite regularly. Make sure you only look for the Psion CombineIT LAN Modem/LAN cards. The reason for this is their CombineIT range run with lower power consumption, needed for the 7book. If buying on ebay, always ask if it has a red CombineIT logo on the card itself. If it has Dacom then this is the older range and should be avoided.

If you have any other questions, please post them here.

Regards

Si

Thanks for the good information. I will probably just bite the bullet and buy the one from Psion.

Thanks again,

Vince, (or anyone else:-)

Could you please tell me where you can get a CombineIT Psion card from? AFAIK they were no longer produced or in stock!

I got mine from EBay ... They tend to appear quite frequently so keep checking. Do, however, make sure that the cables are included.

Do, however, make sure that the cables are included. Excellent advice from Simon there. Many are sold without cables and they can cost around 15-20 UKP each to buy separately.
