My WiFi used to work great. Then I tried the Boingo WiFi client, which caused battery drain problems. I removed it and now can't get the built in WiFi to work.
It recognizes the hotspots, but can't connect to them - both home and in hotels. After numerous soft resets, and fiddling with all t he setting, I finally resorted to a cold restart (after backing everything up).
On the clean machine, after the cold reset, WiFi worked fine, but when I recovered from the backup, it wouldn't work again.
I have deleted all the files I can find that had to do with the Boingo application, but it still doesn't help. I'm thinking that it must have someth ing to do with the registry, but I don't have a clue as to what (I do have Roscoe Registry Edit).
I;m thinking that the next th ing to do is a cold restart and then recover everything but the registry - but not sure what other problems that might cause for other software I have running.
Appreciate any help,
olkush

You can try running 3rd party uninstaller and see if it can completely remove the problem application. You have a few choices;

Thanks Answer Dude - but they haven't helped. I have deleted everything in the registry that I can find that references WiFi (there were a lot), But is still isn't working.
Any other ideas. The thought of a cold reset doesn't excite me.
Thanks,

Sorry, This maybe a little too late to say, but what I do when trying new application is, I backup my device prior of installing new software, if the software get's goofy, I can always restore it.. I guess now you might need to do the cold reset (Hardware reset) and start from scratch.. as far as I know.. registery is hard to fix, because you don't know what changed during the installation of the new software.

You're NOT going to like this, but when I first got my 4150, I installed that Boingo software (I'm 99% sure that's what it was). I had the same connectivity issues. I managed to talk to a VERY underatdning HP CSR, and when all was said and done, he said that he Boingo software was a known issue with the 4150. Something about it interfering with the resident WIFI client that's already installed in the 4150...
I don;t think you have any choice but to do a cold re-start. Make sure your Outlook files are up to date and completely in Synch.
Perhaps answer dude can suggest a backup program that will allow you to backup everything but the registry (If that's even possible...).
Otherwise, have fun, and realize that once you're done, you've learned a good lesson, and hey, it's a cleansing experience to re-install all your software.;)

I'm afraid your right. I have tried deleting everything I can possibley find that has anything to do with Boingo or WiFi, but it still won't work.
I have found that using the backup utility that comes with the machine, you can select what you want to back up and restore. So, I am able to de-select the registry and restore everything else. Only problem is that several of the other programs that I have don't work - so I'll have to work through it.
I also plan to let Boingo know about the problem. Did you also find that the Boingo drained your battery for no apparent reason?

I never got that far using it... I found that it screwed up my connection, so I de-installed it the same day.

Got a reply from Boingo and they have owned up to never testing the 4x55 series with their latest client. They also say there is a newer version that will be available soon that is currently in their QA department going through its final testing and development and should be available for download soon.
I have sent them more details and hopefully they will be doing a more thorough test.
Meanwhile, I did do a full cold reset and your right - it was a clensing experience. In one sence, it was good to get a lot of okd junk off the machine and I will certainly do a back up EVERY time before I install any software and archieve it for a while.
