Hi Guys. Do any of you know if the various EPOC patches are rolled into new netBook OS versions? For example do I have to install the synchronisations patches and GPRS updates?

don't think they are. the email sync is not installed by default anyway, so it would not be logical to include this.

Thanks. I thought not but I wanted to check.

My list of patches currently stands at the list below. If anyone has any to add then please post a reply (it might be worth having a list of current patches anyway).

Synchronisation Upgrade
Improves synchronization between your PC and the Contacts application.

Email Synchronisation Update 1.1
Psion say this is for PsiWin 2.3/2.31 so are PsiWins 2.3.2 and 2.3.3 okay?

GPRS Update
From Mike McConnell's site. Allows GPRS. Is this mandatory for GPRS and is this the best GPRS patch (I have seen several solutions such as the one at http://www.ki-ag.de/html/tech/quickfix.html and the one at http://psiloc.com/psion/eng/gprs/index.html)?

IMAP4 Plug-in for Email
Purely optional depending upon circumstances.

I don't think so - I think this is a classic case of the text being written when Psiwin version X was the latest, and nobody thinking to update that text as newer versions are released.

That's what I thought. It's stupid little things like this make make our lives harder when Psion should be trying to help their users.:(

Hmmm... I didn't think about this until Simon mentioned it. I don't recall reinstalling GPRS update after upgrading to Build 158. Unless it survives as part of the restore process? Am I being dim here?

No you're not. After finally getting GPRS to work on my netBook (don't ask but I just needed to create a new GPRS data account on my mobile) I can confirm that I didn't have to install anything extra either.

Simon, Julie.

Re your chat on GPRS upgrade, I doubt this would have remained in the machine assuming you performed a full hard reset (batteries out for 30 secs or more) before upgrading your OS.

On the 7, 5mx the change maybe more permenant. I remember I only ever had to perform the mobile connectivity upgrade once, and even with future hard resets, this remained. This could be the same for the GPRS upgrade on these machines.

I doubt the same applies to the netbook as this machine is supposed to be completely updateable so the more driver info permenantly stored on the machine, the more chance of future incompatibilities with other operating systems. I would very much suspect (& hope) that it is more the case of GPRS support now being included netbook latest OS release.

Sorry Si, I didn't mean to imply that the upgrade had been retained from a pre-OS upgrade setup (via a restore of a backup or any other means). I know this is not the case for my netBook since I rebuilt the machine's setup from scratch after upgrading the OS.

I actually think that this is due to Opera being included in the OS build ... I think that Opera either includes the 'patch' files or contains alternatives that perform the same task. I can confirm that the estlib.dll file that is needed is included in the ROM.

I certainly did a full hard reset, and wouldn't have expected the GPRS update to be part of the restore process, but at the time I didn't even think about it, so I'm sure I didn't reinstall it manually. I soon would have remembered if GPRS hadn't worked after the upgrade, but it did, so I guess this proves the point.

GPRS upgrade!

Ha

After waiting for this new GPRS-capable machine for ages it didn't come working for GPRS. Went on my trip. GRPS (new software stuff promised from Vernon at TekLogix - very helpful - didn't arrive). C'est la (psion) vie.

Anyway. Spent day typing 3000 word report. Machine hung on e-mail. No paperclip to do soft reset. Removed main battery (having checked lithium cell OK and guess what. HARD RESET. V. unhappy.

Confirmed it was a hardware fault and threw toys out of box at Psion. Newish one being sent to me (apparently).

I love them but Grrrr why don't they check the f***ng things

Grief, Steve, I can imagine you must have been livid - and I'm sure that's putting it mildly!

By the way, to eliminate the need to own a paperclip, may I recommend to everyone a little freeware utility called "Reset Plus" which resides in Control Panel and allows a soft reset to be performed by screen taps or keystrokes.

VERY confused about the GPRS thing now, btw - what's the software from Teklogix meant to do Steve?

Hi Julie

I think they are drivers for the GPRS card

If it is drivers for a GPRS card then I'm very impressed and maybe Psion/Symbian are finally pulling their fingers out to make the netBook truly a connected machine. Not all we need are drivers for bluetooth and full networking capabilities.
