I'm sorry if this post is similar to others but I'm desperate to any information I can before I ship my unit back to Sony.

Despite buying a metal hardcase in the futile hope of protecting myself from the inevitable I now have a broken screen on my 2 month old N760C after dropping it. The outer screen is intact but there are radiating crack lines and a black area visible, I guess from the inner screen. It seems the after market companies only sell replacements for the outer screen (digitizer?).

I see a N760C advertised on e-bay that won't power on. If I was to buy this does any one know if it's possible for the average do-it-yourselfer to swap the screen from one unit to another?

Anyone who has been down this road have any suggestions? Sony won't quote a repair cost until they see my unit but have told me that a broken screen is not covered under warranty.

If you choose to try the repair yourself let it be known you will have to take both sides of the unit apart. The gang of wires attached to the units screen is fed through the stem that the screen rotates on. There is a pevious thread that takes you to pictures of an open unit in this forum for you to look at.

taking your palm apart will void the warranty. Find out if sony will cover this, and if they do, send it back to them. also, make sure that there is no screen problem with the one on eBay. ask the seller to make sure.

I tried it on a 710c and it did not work.
The replacement screen was for another model and there was a no return policy on the screen. It cost me $75.00 to get the screen and I have no use for it now. So I would not recommend attempting to do this repair. I had hear that Sony will charge over 150 for the repair. That might be a better choice than doing it yourself.
PS on the 710c the breakdown is total! All of the guts of the thing was all over my workspace. tiny screws and plastic parts to transfer the hold and back button functions in and out of the case. the battery had to be removed because wires wove in and out of different areas. by the time it was appart and I realized that the screen was missing one whole set of wires I just gave up and turned the thing into an experiement in Visisection !

Thanks for the responses.

Sony Canada in Vancouver, B.C. quoted me 295$Cnd for the screen and 50$Cnd labour for the repair. Now I'm definately looking for a used Clie.

I have been repairing Clies, in particular screens and digitizers. So far, only have parts for NX, NR, NZ, and TG series. Am working on getting other model parts. Will post when i do.
