My 5mx has developed a strange problem.
When I try to insert a special character into a Word file (tick, box, etc) the program crashes with "Reason code : KERN-EXEC, Reason number : 3". All changes to the file are lost, but the file is still there.
Anyone seen this? Know how to fix it?
Thanks,
Alistair

I haven't seen anything like this, but normally the first thing to try is a soft reset.

Yup, done that, but no dice!

Does the crash occur when trying to bring up the list of special characters, or when you've selected one and have hit OK? I'm wondering if the file that contains the special characters (wherever it is) is somehow corrupted?
Anywayse, first thing I would try is (doing a complete backup then) deleting C:\System\Apps\Word\Word.ini and see if the problem is sorted. I'm not sure what other settings are stored in this file, but it may solve your problem. Aside form this, I can only suggest a hard reset and complete restore..

Does it cause the program to crash in each occurence of a Word file? If so, deleting the .ini file might sort it out. If not, why not try saving the contents of the file to another...this might sort out file corruption!?!
Hope this helps.

Well, I got my problem sorted out, or rather my Psion sorted itself!
For some reason - dodgy batteries I think - my machine decided to do a complete hard reset, all on its own.
Bad things about this - if you don't have a backup, you're stuffed. Fortunately I have PsiWin set to do regular backups and only lost a couple of files which I've been able to re-create.
Good things about this - I've got special characters back!
Scary things about this - when is it going to reset itself again......??
Thanks to everyone who offered help and advice.
Cheers,
Alistair
