I don't know what handhelds you have used but I can say speed matters.
I have a HandEra 330 and it is noticably slow. Playing Bejeweled on the full screen mode the jewels are slow to fall and very jumpy. On the NR70V they drop very quickly and smoothly. I also noticed a distinct difference in the time to load an app on the Tungsten T compared to my HE.
Another thing I have heard is that the TT accesses data on the SD card much more quickly. I know it took me almost a minute to launch a 600K+ file in WordSmith from my CF card.
Granted speed may not be apparent on all apps and activities and may be less obvious compared to other machines, but it does matter.
