I bought Missing Sync recently, and before installing, I realized that Palm Desktop 4.0, which Missing Sync asks you to download, recognized and HotSync-ed my Clie on its own. There are some Clie's which will HotSync using Palm Desktop 4.0 only.

If you want to HotSync datebook, phonebook and todo from your newer Clie (such as the SL10 which I own) to your Mac, you do not need Missing Sync. If you would like to use the extra features such as memory stick, then you should consider Missing Sync.

After a lengthy e-mail discussion, they gave me a refund, so I have revised this post to show that they are a good shareware company after all.

I was hopeing that this little bit of advice was going to turn out to be true and save me $30.... but I ended up having to order missing sync.

Yesterday United Package Smashers delivered my shiny new NX-70, purchased from the evil empire known only as Dell (it was supposed to be gunmetal but it was silver - this seems to be a common problem with Dell re. these new NX-70s) and proceded to hook the new puppy up to my imac running osx 10.1.5 and Palm Desktop 4.0.

Nothing.

Purchased and downloaded missing sync (which as I later found out was not the most current version - it was ver 3.0.2 I think.....)

Still Nothing.

Screwed around over my cup of coffee this morning (the missing sync documentation is not the best) went back to their f.a.q. page and realized that the "update" to verson 3.0.3 might help (it was at this time I realized that I only had version 3.0.2 - obviously an old version... why didn't I get 3.0.3 in the first place?).

Kbam - hot sync action.

Works like a charm now....

I guess that there are "a few" Clie's out there that will not need Missing Sync. The Missing Sync customer service mentioned that the Clie's use different chips for different models so I'm one of the rare compatible ones. You should be happy that you got software that you actually "need". I bought Missing Sync and then discovered I did not need it afterall. (Thank God I got a refund).

I am also using Mac Jaguar OS X 10.2. Perhaps this is also an issue, but then, I don't have the resources to go around and test every Clie out there... only those guys at Missing Sync really know.

Yes..... OX 10.2.x vs. 10.1.x could have something to do with it... I have not upgraded to Jaguar myself since I plan on picking up a new Ti powerbook later this month which of course will have 10.2 with it.

It could also be just a difference between our handhelds...

I'm sure the guys at missing sync know.. and it would be nice if they could be a bit more clear on when and where their software is needed for just a basic sync (ie - if you're running OSX 10.2 or this Clie model or whatever.... you don't need missing sync).

What pisses me off the most is the idiots at Sony ignoring the Mac platform all together... I'm not asking them to include Mac software with the device (although that would be nice) just include mac instructions, possibly stating "Hotsyncing with Mac OS is possible with limited functionality" or "Hotsyncing is only supported under Mac OS 10.2.x with limited functionality". If the new NX-70 wasn't such a sexy beast I would have happily denied Sony the sale and got the new Palm... but the NX-70 kicks but !!!
