Hello All,

Just wanted to share my latest iQue (mis)adventure.

I went to the RI Airshow today. Despite Betty's half-hearted attempts to get me lost I managed to get there without major problems. Since there was *a lot* of cars, I marked my position on the parking lot and happily went to the show (which was great, by the way) without even thinking of memorizing the surroundings (stupid me). And then spent about an hour trying to find my car in and around the place where the waypoint was set :( It turned out that Betty in navigation mode sets the waypoint on the nearest road, which in my case happened to be mere 1/3 mi away. Wicked, wicked Betty !

R3 seems to have some problems with route (re)calculation; sometimes the distance to the next waypoint gets stuck on some value, and Betty happily announces "exit right in 0.9 mi" several times in a row despite being 10 mi from the exit. Another nasty feature I haven't seen in R2: route recalculation at highway speeds seems to block map display. This is absolutely unacceptable as the screen can stay blank for several minutes, and it's very easy to miss an exit then.

He! He!

You have to laugh at her foibles. Perhaps she had a bad "air" day.:)

I do that often and my waypoint always gets saved off-road in the middle of big parking lots. When you set your waypoint did Betty think you hadn't reached your destination yet?

Without the benefit of a waypoint, you could view your most recent track and see where you parked as well.

It depends. If you drive on a parking lot, even rather close to the road, but perpendicular to the road, then Betty will assume that you are out in the dirt.
But if you drive parallel to the road, then Betty may assume that you are actually on the road, even if you are rather far away from it.
If you set the Display position at GPS location, you'll not have this problem.

Oh, I see. Since Betty's period is 1/200MHz, she's entitled to a little folly once every few milliseconds, right ?

I think that's exactly what happened.

That's good advice. But as far as I know there's no way to prevent this setting to be changed back to "On Roads" each time a new route is started. Oh well, having experienced such a pleasant walk, I think I'll remember to make sure the waypoint is closer to my car the next time.

Ha ha ha, good one! Much better than Bokkies groan inducing bad 'air' day joke. :)

Not really. I just checked the saved track again and all breadcrumbs were far away from the place I parked. The return track was OK though.

BTW, does this work the same way when you press the jogdial to mark the waypoint, instead of pointing it out on the map?

Oh no. Please don't ask me to repeat the whole experience. The few miles I walked is much more than I do in a month.

I tapped the flag symbol to create the waypoint. I guess it's equivalent to pressing the jog dial.

That's correct. Tapping the flag or holding the jog wheel has the same effect: Creates a waypoint.

From Release 3, you can use auto-routing without necessarily having the unit set to Show Location On Road. But it doesn't work well in simulation mode, since it will then not follow the road close enough. But if we assume you do drive on the road, it will then work (usually).
At least it doesn't automatically set it back to On Road, just because you start following a route.
