I have a new Diamond Mako (i.e. Revo), and I've been trying to connect it via EPOC Connect, to my IBM Thinkpad 600X, Windows 2000 Prof.
No matter what I do it won't connect. I've tried uninstalling the software, re-installing it from the CD, lowering the Baud rates, resetting the Mako, uninstalling the infrared port, made sure the Mako was set to Cable. I called IBM and they told me I probably had to download a serial port utility, which I did, to no avail. I also downloaded a cleanup utility from psion, to no avail.
Is it just not compatible or is there a magic bullet?
(PS - one thing that was advised was to End Task on my laptop's running applications. The Task Manager indicated no applications were open, but there were LOTS of "Processes" listed under a different tab. But it warned me not to end them, so I'm not about to touch those. Correct?)
Thanks for any help out there!
PPS - After years of bad experiences with Psions and power/data loss - even though I LOVED them and their functionality when they worked - I should probably steer clear of the Mako and switch to Palm (yuk) or something. :-(

You need to use PsiWin 2.3.3 (the latest version) with Windows 2000. You can get it from Psion's site (in the support section).
As for going to Palm ... I've just returned after two years of pretending that I could write graffiti!

Hi Wolf - that's the reason I have so much trepidation about the Palm... I hate grafitti. I need a keyboard! Know of any PDA alternatives to Psions and Revos that have a keyboard and are worth their salt as a PDA? For example, the Handspring Treo 180?
Cheers

By the way, Simon's advice is exactly right - you MUST have PsiWin 2.3.3 if you're using Win2K. If you installed PsiWin from the Mako CD then it will no doubt be an earlier version. Use the registry cleaner (which it sounds like you already have done before), then do a fresh install of 2.3.3. and all should be fine. I've been using 2.3.3 on on my Win2K installation for over a year now and it's been totally reliable.

I went to psion.com, and for this download, it says:
"This download is 25Mb in size and will take approx 2hours 30mins to download on a 28.8kbps connection. It is a self-extracting file which when run will unpack to your system temp folder and autorun PsiWin setup."
There was one customer review which reported that the download was successful in achieving connectivity, but that it was unreliable and troublesome when it came to file conversion and agenda synchronization.
So, before I go and bother downloading this huge file, I need more convincing. ?

Yes, it's a large download, but at least the software itself
is free! I remember when we used to have to pay for PsiWin separately (and quite expensively) from the purchase of the machine itself.
Just to repeat, if you're working with Win2K, (or XP) then this version of PsiWin is essential if you want to connect your Mako.
To avoid the download, I have seen this version of PsiWin available on certain magazine coverdisks - but since you haven't stated your location it's a bit difficult to advise.

Update - I went to the Revo site and found an upgrade for the EPOC software for Windows 2000! And it worked!
So I'm finally connected. That's the good news.
The bad news is I just talked to my Dad whose Revo crashed and he lost all his data. He said he can't find any backups on his laptop but I suspect he's not looking for the right thing. (By the way let me know if I should move this question elsewhere on the boards...). Anyhow - any idea what he should be looking for? When he went to Restore, it said there was no Backup to restore. But I believe you can change the path to which the Restore is looking on the hard drive. Is this correct? Secondly, he was wondering, if there IS indeed backups on his laptop, is there a way for him to print out the data without restoring it back to his Revo? I think it has to do with how he synchronized or perhaps not. Help!! (and thanks :-))

I went to the Revo site and found an upgrade for the EPOC software for Windows 2000 Can you give us a URL for this Revo site, as the update would be a very useful alternative to downloading the full 25Mb PsiWin 2.3.3

Sure. The update I downloaded is an update for Epoc Connect 5.01.
It's actually on the Diamond Mako site (which bought Revo).

Sure. The update I downloaded is an update for Epoc Connect 5.01. OK, thanks, but it is not the Revo site and the update is not specifically for the PsiWin software that comes with a Revo, though it may work with some versions of PsiWin.
It's actually on the Diamond Mako site (which bought Revo). Both the Revo and Diamond Mako were made by Psion with the Mako badged version being sold by Sonic Blue in the US only.
