5mx occasionally stops working during use - ie won't respond to being turned on and off...as if there are no batteries inside at all.

When I do a soft reset it works fine - but what an annoying problem - and also very erratic, never know when it will happen - can be ok for days and days then seems to do it.

Have noticed does it round about usage with connectivity programs, but not sure if this is significant or not.

Well, I don't know what the problem is, but in this situation I would be thinking about trying a hard reset.

In any case, I would certainly be taking regular backups, in case this is an indication of an imminent failure - I do hope not.

Perhaps someone else will have encountered this problem and will be able to shed more light.

I suspect you may be getting a "hung" application, particularly if you are experiencing it with connectivity. An application can hang and simply display as a blank screen, which might give you the impression the machine doesn't switch 'on' or 'off'. Next time it happens, try "killing" the foreground application with Ctrl-Fn-Shift-K after which the application should open again normally.

I agree with Mike McC's analysis; I found very similar behaviour with the "Pocket Bible" application, if I make the mistake of asking it to search for a null string. The only way out that Ifound was to do a soft reset (didn't know about the four-fingered salute!)
