(sorry couldn't help myself and old Frank Crawford joke)
Anyway took Betty out of the cupboard (had not used her for 3 weeks) to find her battery as flat as a fluke! Once charged I decided to give her a test, I'm off to Florida tomorrow and Betty will navigate me and the family around the various places we're going to visit.
Alas though no waypoints? No voice! I didn't realise they were battery dependant... Anyway a hotsync later and another test, this time Betty just spouted random words and numbers at me instead of proper instructions.
Hmm, a reset and a re-install of everything solved the problem but you can be sure I will not let the battery run down again!

Dave, that has to be some kind of record!
If you are taking her with you, are you taking a beanbag and antenna as well? I don't think you'll get much mileage handheld otherwise. What are you doing for maps out of interest as like us in the south east you'll only have a basemap to rely on? I daresay Florida will be ok as basemaps go on account of its popularity.
Say hi to the mouse with the big ears for me!

Yes I am taking the beanbag and the gilsson (spelling?) external with me. I bought Betty in the states a few months ago so I already have the USA city select maps. Luckily I own a streetpilot III so also use navigator maps on her for the uk.
She's packed safely in my carry on now and ready for her duties. Not as you might think of getting us all over the state of Florida but stopping the arguements that come with asking someone to map read and getting then lost! The only voice i have to listen to in the car will be betty's..

I must admit Dave, the strength of the iQue comes into its own when you are in a totally unfamiliar area or country. That was our experience in Italy in March. We could actively go out of our way and 'get lost' knowing we could always get back.
Even today, I realised how I took Betty for granted. Simply driving from Shithole (sorry, that's Crawley for those who know it) to a builders merchant in Dorking is no big deal. I've used her twice to get there in the past few weeks. Now that I've RMA'd her for repair I tried to get there without her. Could I find the same route? Not a chance! I actually had to stop and ask for directions and what I was given was a bit haphazard.
Never leave home without her. If you don't have her, stay in!

I know i used the streetpilot to navigate myself around europe for 3500 miles! Never failed us once. I have driven around orlando and maimi before but I must admit there's a certain pleasure in relaxing as you know someone else is taking care of the directions.

Questionarie.
If you would hear that I haven't used my iQue for three weeks, would you then:
A.) Think someone got the units wrong, it should be seconds.
B.) Think someone got the units wrong, it should be minutes.
C.) Come to my funeral.

Sorry to revive this thread but I had something similar happen and have not been able to cure Betty.
I recently bought a Sony Reader and have been using that to read my ebooks. I guess Betty got jealous because she sat on the counter for a few weeks. I put her in the cradle but didn't notice that my charger had come loose from from the socket and so her battery was dead dead dead. :(
Let her charge for a day, did a hot sync and I though all was well. Updated some software (backupman, ptunes) and all seemed to go well.
I don't use her for driving around LA, but last week had to go on a road trip, so plugged here into the beanbag cradle in my car and set off. Well, she started spouting nonsense instead of directions. I sort of knew where I was going, so turned the sound off and just used the visual cues.
So I got home, found this thread and did a hard reset, followed by a sync. Took her for a drive and she still spouted nonsense. So I downloaded and re-installed the last garmin update ("Release 4"). No joy.
So does anybody have any words of wisdom? By "hard reset" I mean pressing the reset while holding the power button and then hitting "up" when prompted to erase all data.
Thanks in advance.

There are still some easy possibilities. You may need to restore the voice files. They might have been hashed. Failing that, you might need to reload the map file. It's possible that the database in the map file that links to the appropriate voice files for routing directions may have been messed up.

I figured when I re-installed release 4 it would also fix any voice files, but it didn't. I chose the "Change Voice" option from the CD and now "Elizabeth" gives me great directions in a wonderful English accent :)

That would be a good indication that your voice files were screwed up. Changing the voice simply installs a new set with a different voice in them. Changing back will likely restore the original ... if you care.

When in doubt, do the easy thing: reload files.
