Just got my E740 upgraded by Toshiba local office and found a big problem -- I can't establish ad-hoc Wi-Fi connection with my notebook.
The problem is the stupid Wireless LAN utility: to establish an ad-hoc link I need to run this program to set the Wi-Fi card to ad-hoc mode, while this damned utility always complains "please turn on the communication switch". Jesus! I've turned off and on the switch for more than 100 times. Every time I turn on the switch, because there's no any AP, it just refuses to work with a short beep. That's nature, but they should at least give me a chance to change the wi-fi mode to ad-hoc initially!
Please help me, what can I do to activate the WLAN utility?

Thanks much for your help!

Gloria,
Got my e740 back Friday afternoon from the Upgrade. At home where I have a WiFi network, everything worked fine, at work this morning I have the same problem you posted, no ability to access the "Wireless Lan Utility". (There is no WiFi at work, but I used to be able to access the utility) At lunch I will go home and try the WiFi again. I wounder if the upgrade changed the function such that if there is no signal present, it will not activate all of the WiFi electronics. I really like the unit BUT....

Took the e740 back into an environment where there is a WiFi netword running, and was able to access the "Wireless LAN Utility" with no problems. All wireless function is as it was. I am now back in a non-WiFi environment, and I am now waiting to see how long it takes before it gives up. Will

Will, thanks for your reply.
Now I am in a Wi-Fi environment -- actually I'm using my notebook to post this reply thru Wi-Fi. But I still can't get my W740 connected :-( Still can't access the WLAN utility. I think I need to change the ESSID to right one, but since I couldn't use WLAN utility, there's no way to change it. God, seems like a dead lock!

One last idea... Do a soft reset. After making changes to the WiFi configuration I had to soft reset to get mine to recognize the new environment. There is the chance that 'they' broke something while doing the upgrade, may have to send it back a second time for repair (argh!!!)
