I'm not sure whether or not anyone remembers this, but a while back I posted something about the Smartbook from Book Digital Co. in China. eXpansys were selling it at £586, a could £1000 saving on the nB Pro.
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=107767
I looked at book digital's site recently, and saw they had two similar devices launched:
The G168A is more advanced; it has an SD/MMC slot, Compatability with an 802.11b wireless module, and more RAM.
The G168A on the manufacturer's website (http://e683.com/en/htm/products_services/Products_show.asp?id=3)
The G168C Is a clamshell device, of similar specification to the G168A, but with a built in VGA camera, bigger RAM, built in Wireless, and with a much more sexy design. It isn't due for release until early 2005, and they have removed it from the website.
Will post when I have more information on that.
I was sent a word document by Kingwood Lee at Book Digital. When I try to attach it on here, it says it is an invalid file type. If anyone wants to see it, send me your e-mail in PM and I'll e-mail it to you.
Kingwood said that both the 138 and 168A are 650 USD (A good price :) )
He told me however that the UK price would be dependant on the UK distibutor. I have e-mailed that UK distibutor, and I will post when I receive a response.
Dan.

If you zip the file, or convert it to plain text, you should be able to attach it, provided that it is not too large. I can't remember offhand what the file size limit is.
Julie
Yes Daniel you did post it but on the HPC forum. I tried to open the attachment but couldn't.I will try later.

Hi Dan,
I'm assuming you are in the UK.
Price of the G138 is £499, shipping is £6 next day to the UK. We have
these in stock in silver colour with UK keyboards and locale.
We are also able to offer GPRS connections if you require- to recommend
a tariff we would need to know the type of use.
We can offer car charger adapter, wireless LAN cards, Softmaker
Word/Excel compatible applications as options if required.
For the G168, we don't have stock at present as this unit has only
recently been launched. The UK price is £549.

If I remember correctly, my first S5 cost £499(inc VAT) all those years ago.
This basic Smartbook price seems very reasonable, considering.
However, I'm just guessing that it's just the OS and no software included, and that you need to add 17.5%.
It would be interesting to see what adding the Softtmaker does to the final price.
Bear in mind, that as I write, both Dell and Toshiba have offers for £499 Notebooks (XPhome). - now if only Apple did a budget iBook for that....

Tried to attach Word Doc in a ZIP archive but:
The file that you have tried to attach is too big. The maximum size is 102400 bytes.
I'm unaware of what software there is.
I'll contact chris and ask.
Again, If anyone wants the word doc, just send me your e-mail addy, or when i have some working webspace I'll put on the net.

Reply from Chris Billington:
Hi Dan,
Those prices are plus VAT. We are able to offer discounts for quantity
purchases.
The standard software load with Windows CE.net is a bit different to
PocketPC: there is a Wordpad application that can read/create Word
documents, and viewer apps for Excel, Powerpoint, PDF, images and Media
Player.
There is an Outlook-compatible 'Inbox' application that supports POP and
IMAP.
For creating/editing more complex Word and Excel documents we recommend
Textmaker and Planmaker:
http://www.softmaker.de/tmh_en.htm about £33
http://www.softmaker.de/pmh_en.htm about £33
These are very full-featured apps comparable to the full MS versions,
available for many platforms. They are much more capable than the
'Pocket Excel' and Pocket Word' on PDAs. With the big screen on the
G138/168 you can do 'real work' with them.
For Appointments/Todo we recommend CEAgenda:
http://hkcho.hdmember.net/ceagenda/ceagenda_e.html price $20
Demo and/or trial versions of all these apps are available.
We are in the process of negotiating 'bundle' versions of
Textmaker/Planmaker but this unfortunately only applies to 'corporate'
purchases of multiple units due to licensing restrictions.
