I put a brand new 512MB card in the iQue and downloaded the new basemaps to it to see what they were like. They loaded ok. I then built a large set with Map Source and City Select North America v5. I loaded some waypoints from my Street Pilot, edited them, then moved the .gdb file into the Add-On directory and tried to hot sync. I got the following message:
HotSync operation started 07/18/04 05:06:30
- Installed file: GMAPSUPP.IMG to the SecureDigital (SD) Card
ERROR: The following file(s) could not be installed to the SecureDigital (SD) Card because there is no application on your handheld to open these files.
If you have recently installed such an application, please run that application and then perform a HotSync operation.

Install To Card synchronization failed
Conduit Error: Unknown error. (1000)
I ran the Map application, but I still get the same error. I also tried to build a file with Map Install, but it wouldn't work either.
Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this problem?

You aren't supposed to be able to load any gdb files to the iQue.
You can load map files, provided they are prepared (with Mapinstall or Mapsource) for transfer to the iQue. They'll then be converted to img or pdb files, depending upon if you choose SD card or internal memory as the destination. They'll also be placed in the proper folder for transfer to the iQue upon next hotsync. Regarding from your message, which you quoted, you've already accomplished this.
Waypoints can be extracted from mps files (not gdb) with Garmin's plug-in for the Palm Desktop Address Book. The plug-in is found at their website.

Sorry - I said the wrong thing. When I go into Map Source and load the file (which I thought was a HotSync operation started 07/18/04 09:20:25
- Installed file: GMAPSUPP.IMG to the SecureDigital (SD) Card
ERROR: The following file(s) could not be installed to the SecureDigital (SD) Card because there is no application on your handheld to open these files.

Install To Card synchronization failed
Conduit Error: Unknown error. (1000)gdb file) it tries to send the .img file to the card and can't.
I tried installing Americas Standard basemap on a new card (which worked before) and it gives me the same error. Apparently when I tried to load the Map Source file I wiped out the software. The first time I tried to hot sync the file, then I realized I should be using Transfer. Should I remove the Palm desktop and try to install it again?

Hmmm, I'm still somewhat confused, since it seems to say that the img file got in there, but the gdb didn't. Which is as can be expected, since the iQue doesn't understand any gdb file.
If you use the QueMap application and delete the maps, and then start over, what happens then?
Try with a small map, since that's quicker. Mark one or two tiles with Mapinstall. Finish the map preparation, then Hotsync. Does that work?

I think I finally figured out what was wrong. I had copied the GDB file into Palm Add-on like you would when you are hot sync-ing a file. I am pressed for time since we are leaving and I didn't read the Map Source manual - just relied on my past experience using it for the Street Pilot. Then I started realizing that I probably had to "Transfer" not use normal Palm hot sync. I ran Transfer but forgot to delete the GDB file from the Add-On folder, so Hot sync kept trying to load it on every card I hot synced with. I deleted it from Add-on and it worked on one card. Then I tried it with another card and got the same message. I searched and found the file in many other places (I don't understand how it got there.) After deleting it from some of those places, I can now put base images on the cards. I've read many threads on the forum and learned so much - I wouldn't have been able to do any of this from the Garmin manuals.
Thanks a lot for the great information you've given.

Yes, I think you did, since this sounds reasonable to me too. As you have noticed, the interface between a PC and the iQue is not like it's with the other Garmin models.

Thought you might be interested in Garmin Tech supports solution to this problem.
would be happy to help you with this. This error occurs due to a bad registry value from a previous version of the GARMIN Unlock Wizard.
You can resolve this by going into your REGISTRY EDITOR and deleting the improper key. Please DO NOT go anywhere other than what is describe below. Errors made in your REGISTRY EDITOR can cause other problems with your pc.
To get to the REGISTRY EDITOR:
1) Go to your START menu, then RUN
2) TYPE regedit, then click OK
3) Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER and click on the + to the left of it to expand the folders
4) Go to the SOFTWARE folder and click on the + to the left of it to expand the folders
5) Go to the GARMIN folder and click on the + to the left of it to expand the folders
6) Find the UNLOCK WIZARD folder, click on the folder and press DELETE on your keyboard. You should get a message asking if you are sure you wish to delete this folder, answer YES.
Whenever changes are made within the REGISTRY, you must shut down your computer and restart it. Once this is complete, you should be good to go.
The good news about Tech support -
I was missing the AC charger from my box and told them I was going to Europe in a few days and needed it. The web site says when you are missing something, you have to mail them a paper copy of your sales receipt, etc. The Garming product specialist is shipping me a travel kit, not just the charger, with 1 day air. Kudos to them for their great response.
