Can anyone shed some light on this? OldBlue 11-04-2002, 08:52 PM From what I have read, Real Networks (Real Player, Real Audio, etc.) is the source for Palm's mp3 player, but did not have the mp3 player completed in time for the Tungsten's release date. When it is finally ready, it will be available on the Palm website as a free download. I have not heard anything about a tentative date. I'm hoping it's soon, as I would like to play a few favorite mp3s on my TT. OldBlue PDAguy 11-04-2002, 09:51 PM Thanks, keep us posted will you. I'm thinking about swithing from my 665 sony clie plyte 11-05-2002, 05:37 AM I guess Palm would not incorporate a DSP Chip if not using it for music. They tested the TT an I heard they talking (in net issues) about a very good quality sound. A few days and it will be available. X'mas will be fine. Plyte:) Monon333 11-07-2002, 02:48 PM I wonder how Palm tested their chip if they don't have a MP3 player for thier own product..... Just Asking OldBlue 11-08-2002, 02:55 AM Monon333 Although the retail TT was not released with an MP3 player, don't you suppose Palm tested the Texas Instruments OMAP1510 ARM processor with numerous audio applications in their R&D labs? And don't you suppose that Palm might have given some credibility to Texas Instruments' claim that the DSP works? OldBlue plyte 11-08-2002, 05:07 AM On another forum they talk about the TT inbuild voice recorder. There are reports that confirm that the sound quality is pretty good i.e. in churches, at home, music recording by the microphone. I guess the DSP chip is involved in that recording (ADC - DAC). So I'm satisfied with the fact that the TT will be a great music player in the future. Plyte Monon333 11-08-2002, 05:25 AM OldBlue That was my point, if they have audio programs for testing in their labs, then why not put one in your product...... OldBlue 11-08-2002, 10:58 AM ... Because test and analysis equipment and programs are not the same as items released to the general public. (As a person whose job is testing PDAs, you should know that.) You can test for accuracy of sound reproduction with a signal injector, wave form generator, and oscilloscope, but there would be no reason to place them in a release version PDA (although a digital o'scope would look pretty cool!). Similarly, R&D and QC lab equipment for testing digital music would not be the same as an MP3 player released to the public. From what I've read, Real Networks should have had the MP3 player module ready in time for the TT's release. If all other pieces were in place and the TT release date had been decided long ago, I would agree with Palm to introduce the TT as planned and offer the MP3 player later when it was ready. I, for one, am glad that Palm did, as my TT is head and shoulders above my trusty m505. OldBlue OldBlue 11-08-2002, 11:05 AM plyte The TT's voice recorder is excellent! My one criticism, and it's a minor one, is that the microphone opening (i.e. hole) is positioned just above the Record button. The microphone is too easily covered with one's thumb or finger when holding the Record button down. I have learned to press the button with the tip of my thumb, which automatically leaves the microphone uncovered. OldBlue PDA Street
