Help!
I attempted to upgrade my m500 with OS4.1. I followed the instructions and I never got the "Next" button, and I did wait about 10 minutes. So I canceled the operation. Now when I try to HotSync I get a message saying "An Application on the PC failed to respond to a confirmation query. This application may need to be restarted." I'm not sure what happened.
Is OS4.1 worth all this hassle? Also, I read something about debug mode- what's that about? Thanks in advance for your help, this forum can really be helpful.

There seem to be two issues here:
1). the failed OS Flashing.
2). the hotsync failure.
They can be related problems but need not be.
If you cannot hot sync you cannot make a new attempt to flash the OS. Lets address issuer 2)..THe repair link is below.
1). WHen the sync is working and your ready to Flash the OS do a Debug reset and put it in Advanced Update. as follows:
Debug mode -- press and hold the "down" scroll button while pressing the reset button on the back of the unit. The Palm should reset and display an unusual screen (depends on the model). If "down" doesn't work, try "down" and "up" simultaneously.
Advanced mode -- when you start up the upgrade program, there's a button on the far left marked "Advanced" -- this starts the upgrade procedure without trying to do a backup hotsync first.

Thanks for the help so far Doc. I reloaded my Palm Desktop & deleted the reg files that the directions said to. How do I reload the conduits for my AvantGo, Epocrates and Time Copy (which works really well)?
I still can't get my Palm to go into debug mode and flash the little square in the left corner. I'll try one more time if you have any more tips however if that doesn't work I'll stay with 4.0 because I'd really hate to permenently goof something up.
Thanks again Doc, it's obvious that you put a lot of time into helping our Palm Blvd community. You've helped a lot of folks.

Some 500s are a real pain to get into debug. Try both scroll buttons down at the same time.
There is a debug dot command but I suggest this only as a last resort. Here is how: get into a note field or memo, write the Graffiti short cut (like a cursive "l"), tap twice ,( a Graffiti period), write the number "1" in the Graffiti number area. 50% of the time this will lock up the Palm (soft reset to get out), 50% you will get into a debug mode that opens the internal serial connection. This mode if it locks up eats batteries so reset out of it if it is not working. Again, this is a last resort.

As to the other conduits, well the bad news is that they need to be reinstalled. The good news is you did it right before so you will get it right again.

I can't get my M500 past frozen (palm powered) screen after a software update from Palm.com. Locked on that screen and nothing seems to make a change it or different.
I have tried all the resets/checks on this page.
http://tinyurl.com/ownh
This a brand new unit (never used) and is my first try at using a Palm.
Help please.Thank you in advance.

I pressed and held the down button to get into debug mode (with flashing icon in left hand top conner)
before trying to flash upgrade from OS 4 to OS 4.1 and the Palm screen does show it is getting the info when upgrade it sent with the odd screen (like the Matrix screen saver). After it is sent (100%) though I get the same frozen screen "Palm Powered) and a flashing icon in the upper left hand corner. I let the Palm sit for 20 mins in hot sync with out touching any keys to see if screen will go away and it does not. Also waited 20 mins to see if the computer software used to flash up grade does any thing and it
does not and is locked on a screen that says:
" Now that you have upgraded your palm OS software you need to perform one more HotSync operation to restore your original data and applications to your hand held.
1) Follow the set up procedure that appears on your upgraded handheld.
2) Place your hand held back in HotSync cradle (or Cable), and perform
another HotSync Operation."
With two more steps (total of four steps) and a option that says to click on next but is not avalible to me since it is not clickable.

My upgrade software stays locked on this screen and Palm does not give option to HotSync. Palm stays frozen on "Palm Powered" screen with flashing icon in upper left hand corner.
I noticed that step #2 says to "Place your hand held back in HotSync cradle (or Cable), and perform another HotSync Operation." Is their a key moment when the Palm should be removed from the HotSync? Cause it never says to remove the Palm from HotSync in the first place.

Also tried removing the Palm from HotSync for twenty mins after flash upgrade and get the same problem. In fact the unit has been frozen for hours now and does not power down or change in any way. Tried resets again and again listed on this page
http://tinyurl.com/ownh
and ways mentioned in earlier posts and no keys are stuck and verified all work when pressed.

If this helps remember this is a brand new unit just out of box that had not info/data from me in it. Just the stock/factory data/software that comes in the palm.

I would like to Be a Palm user ...some day.. soon.
Please help,

Help!!

The "REPAIR" link appears to be broken. Does someone know where it is or how to help with this error (I cannot sync anymore) and get:

An application on the PC failed to respond to a confirmation query.

Other posts in reference to this have not helped. I just tried re-installing the Palm Desktop software too! Any advice would be much appreciated.

Mike

Joe,

It's been a long time since I upgraded an M500 so I'm going from memory here. The upgrade will sometimes fall over if you don't use the advanced upgrade method. I don't know if you've tried this yet but the information is at http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=413,E=0000000000017742716,K=6650,Sxi=6,useTemp late=Case.tem,CASE=12784 .

Mike,

This is a classic 8009 error and is caused either by a third party application that's had a DLL file overwritten or a third party conduit problem, particularly Docs to Go. Go to http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=261,E=0000000000017748725,K=7253,Sxi=4,useTemp late=Case.tem,CASE=1005 and download the hotsync check utility and run it. This should find the the third party program that's causing the problem. Read and follow the rest of the steps on the page if the hotsync check utility doesn't find a problem.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it was Doc's to Go ............since I tried to "re-install" it on my computer right before all of this happened. PalmOne's HotSync Check could not find anything though. I resorted to the following steps (see below). Preliminary tests look positive (the basic conduits now work). I am now in the process of building back all of the other conduits (just time consuming). I am ASSUMING that all will work just duckie when I'm done.

What's the deal with Doc's to Go anyway????

Thanks Jim!!!

Anyone that has a similar problem (because I've seen them posted out there.................. give the (below) instructions a try.

Sounds like your getting an 8009 error msg --
to double check that click on the Hotsync Manager icon in your system tray, then click on "view log" you should see the error message followed by "(8009)"

For this you have 2 options now ---

First uninstall palm desktop from the add remove programs
after that follow these steps in full -

click on the start menu
then up to run
from the "run" window type regedit
from there you should now see about 6 folders
click the plus (+) beside HKEY_CURRENT_USER
then the plus beside software
then the plus beside U.S. Robotics
now you should see both "palm quick install": and "pilot desktop"
delete both of those folders (and ONLY those folders)

after that restart computer
reinstall software (don't worry no info will be lost)

if that doesn’t work -- palm has setup a program called Hotsync Check --

download it form http://www.palmone.com/us/support/d...tsynccheck.html

and run that program . -- should fix it right up
