I have an SJ30. I turned it off, but left it at work over a weekend. It had been on the charger up until the point that I left. When I came back on Monday, it was dead. It came back to life, but its memory was wiped. It was back up to speed after about 30 minutes of syncing and messing with it.

This is my first PDA, and I was wondering...

When I push the on/off button on top, it seems to be off, but when I press it again, it comes up instantly exactly where I left it. Is it actually turning off? Or, is it in some sort of "limbo" mode that is still using energy, but just not showing me? I was surprised that an "off" pda would use up the battery over a 2 day period.

Any thoughts?

Steve

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem. Have you found any cure for the problem?

No, but it hasn't happened again. In fact, the battery life seems to be quite good now.

Palm PDAs are never truly off, otherwise the RAM would clear (like on a PC) and alarms would never go off (like on a PC). OFF puts it in a sleep mode - the screen is powered off, the RAM is maintained, the processor comes on every now and then to check for alarms, button presses, etc.

One unexpected activity is that the processor comes on if Beam Receive is ON and there is stray IR (like TV remotes, etc.) nearby. You should set it to OFF unless you beam frequently.

Also, some badly written programs prevent sleep mode. I once tried a program to beam my numbers ot a Nokia phone. The program wouldn't stop beaming until the battery died  Do a Warm Reset to shut down such programs.

Glad everything is ok for you now. The SJ30 battery should last about a week, esp. when OFF.
