If anyone cares, I heard today that you can pick up a i705 for about $160, starting today.
Personally, I think the 705 is a BIG mistake by palm, and one that we won't see around after Christmas.
Incidentally, I was at Staples this weekend, checking out the Tungsten T, and the clerk said the store has not sold one 705! Is this that big of a surprise though? Even though it does have wireless capabilities, why black and white? Why would someone pay top-end prices for a b & w pda? Besides the wireless capabilities has very limited service.
It doesn't really matter, but thats my opinion.

In one sentence you say they can be picked up for $160. Then you ask who would pay top-end prices. $160 is nowhere near top-end--$600-$700 is. Wake up.
Why black and white:
-battery life
-battery life
-battery life
-email doesn't look much better in color
-it's a tool, not a toy
-clearer screen

tuffer, huh????
HELLO........They are practically giving the 705 away because nobody is buying it!
Black and white is for people who don't know any better? Ever heard of lithium ion?
I am wide awake, though I believe I threw a nickel in your cup on the way to work this morning....."tufferguy"

i totaly agree on it being a misktake. though i consider (almost) every integration of mobile connection into a pda a mistake. even if you have mobile connectivity or even a complete mobile phone built in (those repulsive visors; have they completely lost there brains at visor?) you will still be carrying a mobile phone around. the point: why not use the phone for a much cheaper connection capable of doing the same (using GPRS even better) things???

The i705 is the best palm to date in my ever so humble opinion.
The seamless, device-less(!!!) connectivity to email, PQAs and applications is amazing. Nothing on the market even comes close to it. Sure, I wish it was color and faster... but the connectivity is FAR more important to me.
Tungsten is cool, but in order to get my email on it, I have to buy about $300 worth of OTHER crap to connect to it....
I have been testing a Blackberry too... and let me tell you... it is making me love by Palm even more!

fblau,
Im not sure it's the BEST palm to date, though it certainly was a good idea... but I tend to side with tuffguy at least on the one fact that I would think would make a difference. COLOR
Sure it isn't necessary for e-mail and such but there are times when I could see the info being retrieved from the web as fairly useless without it.
Palm has started displaying the replacement for the i705 though none have reached the shelves as yet. The Tungsten W which has a color screen in 320 res. and a thumb keyboard intead of a grafitti area. It looks very nice but I dont think I can justify the expense to upgrade any time soon.:D

The i705 lets me get a copy of a proposal on the run, edit it and shoot it back to work for printing with out having to stop and find a phone line or a KINKOs.
Is it a great web browser - hell no !!!
It is GREAT for business users to get e-mail and upload files.
The real kicker is I got mine for under $200.
Oh and having Yahoo Messanger on line is nice too.
Id does not do everything, but I get five days of use on one charge with out plugging in.
In a year or two then the whole county is G2 or G3 compatable I'll change, but until then this little box is economical and does just fine.

Exacto-mundo Don,
I've finally decided to jump in to the PDA game, purchasing a i705 tomorrow. What sold me? POP3/SMTP and full size keyboard for longer docs. Yeah the thumb is cool or D-pad or whatever, but man I'm over the hill (43) I have to crack my knuckles after 5 minutes of typing, can't imagine using a thumb key pad full time. I spent the mandatory time in the stores playing with it and I much prefer Grafitti (sp). My nine-year old son learned the entire G-alphabet while in Office Depot!
Like was posted the speed isn't too bad when you realize that you're only doing little text clippings not full blown 'flash' web pages. Color vs monochrome (like the Tungsten W)? Well, the way I look at it for for under $200, I can wait probably less than 18 months and pick up the next generation of color after I learn graffiti, hehehe!
Bottom line I can access and send using my Yahoo mail, at least that's what these forum pages say, have a real working tool for on the road doc's and most importantly drop my Franklin daytimer! That's not bad for the money.

BTW thanks for all of the honest enthusiasm, critique and humor this board helped me cement my decision to stay POS and Palm specifically. I'm sure I won't regret it.

Oh Yeah,
I narrowed my choice down to a 515, which is a really cool product, ($299 after rebate) plus something like omnisky.net (yesterday earthlink had listed $270 modem, and $39.95/month , and it appeared some outrageous startup fee) and the i705 ($0 modem - part of the dirt cheap $149, and as low as $19.95-$39.95/month, $10 set up). I simply figured if I was to go with the 515 why not spend what $700, for the Tungsten W in a few months, per the above numbers the TW is about the same outlay?! So it simply came down to $700 ouch, or $200!
None on this forum have denounced the i705 for only having 8MB versus the 515's 16MB, so I guess that really isn't an issue for making a decision. Seems to me it comes down to the fact that the i705 is obsolete with the TW on the horizon, ... well hell, everything on my desktop is obsolete.
I didn't go for the Treo simply because I want the ability to have a portable keyboard.

Bery'
I figure you get what one two years MAX before you need to upgrade? So my i705 will be replaced in 12-16 month one way or the the other. No matter WHAT I but I am looking at that exact same life expectency(sp) !!!
So, my other choice was an m515 with a infra-red connect to the cell phone. But this cost me a lot of flexability.
What will Palm have out in two years, well the rummor is a G2 compatable palm, with a color web brouser that WORKS, the windows stuff is as stable and Bill Clinton at a girls reform school.
So yup this is my choice, it runs word, excell, and when I upgrade it will me upwardly comptable. Ever try going from windows 98 to ME? LOL.
Good luck on your efforts.

I tried.. Boy, have I tried. Obviously I like the BlackBerry. Seamless, fast E Mail.. GSM/GPRS (and a phone, too).
But I had to try the i705. Could never get the "corporate" e mail to work through our firewall. And Palm Technical Support was clueless.
The Palm i705 was Palm's first attempt to break into the enterprise market. And I think they've failed, for many of the reasons enumerated above. It's too big, too slow and (for me) couldn't get the job done. I love all of the applications available for it, but since I couldn't get it to work through our firewall, it's of limited use to me - even at $160.
Back to the BlackBerry...

I agree with your opinion. If you're going to make a higher-end PDA with wireless internet, you might as well throw in a color screen. Also, the service plans are very expensive for the average user. There are no phone capabilities with the i705 so you'll still have to carry around two devices. We won't see the i705 around for much longer in my opinion.

But can SOMEONE please help me find a wireless isp besides PALM.NET which charges a ton of money for little internet! I need the service for LIttle Rock, AR AND NASHVILLE, TN.
THanks!

I got the impression that the only internet service provider was Palm.net. Correct me if I'm wrong though. Never actually used the i705.

Too bad. The thing I don't like about the i705 are those very high service plans.
