Hi there, does any one know how to use an external modem with a normal telephone line to browse the web and send E-mail? Is it possible and how?
Tnx

I have never done this myself but I believe that all you need is a null modem adaptor. Have a look at http://www.clove.co.uk/products.asp?product=PS5-9/9 for an example. Essentially this allows you to join your modem's serial cable to your Psion's serial cable, hence attaching a modem to your Psion's serial port.

Yes, I have done this, and Simon's advice is exactly right.

It's pretty straightforward, but do check the connector on your particular modem to make sure you get the right null modem adapter. Mine requires a 9/25 pin one.

Oops, I misread Simon's post there a bit - yes the 9/9 pin adapter will connect the two serial cables. In my case I use the 9/25 pin one to connect the Psion serial cable straight into the modem, a slightly tidier solution, perhaps.

As you have already been advised, you need to include a null modem adaptor or cable between the PsiWin cable and modem. Alternatively, if you are in the UK (because you don't say:)), you can buy a cable to go directly between Psion and modem from www.serialleads.co.uk

If you do use the PsiWin cable and null modem adaptor, make sure that Carrier Detect (DCD) is not checked in your settings.

How exactly is this set up. Sorry excuse my ignorance but which bit goes where and now are the modem settings configered on the Psion? all souds too easy as just attaching a cou[ple of leads, why buy a proper one if it is so?

Hi Nigel,

How exactly is this set up. Sorry excuse my ignorance but which bit goes where and now are the modem settings configered on the Psion?

It pretty much is as easy as has been confirmed above. Plug in the modem to the phone line, connect your psion to the modem (using the null modem adapter) and you should be ready to go.

There is the small matter of drivers for the modem, but if you have a US Robotics Sportster, then the drivers are already included. If you are using a different Hayes compatible modem then you could try the Generic Modem Settings (within the control panel), although you may need to add additional init. strings which you should be able to get hold of online or from the manufacturer.

I suppose there are several reasons why Psion offer the Travel Modem / PC Card adapter + PC Card Modem.

1) Compatibility with Psion guarranteed
2) Size. It's all very well having a PDA that fits in your pocket but not if the modem needs a suitcase!!
3) Psion modems have the ability to be used around the world and cope with most country phone networks. PC fixed modems tend to be designed for the UK Market and phone networks.

Kind Regards

Simon

I'm guessing Nigel was maybe referring to buying a "proper" cable, as Mike suggested, rather than a "proper" modem.
