My manager just purchased a Tungsten E Palm Pilot, which I have been unsuccessful at getting to sync! Actually, the computer does not even recognize the USB connection. He is running Windows 2000, and he has 2 USB ports, one in which an HP printer is hooked into, and one in which we hooked the Palm to. I was able to sync the Palm one time initially when I unplugged the printer. However, since then, the computer does not recognize the USB connection, and in Device Manager, the USB port appears with a red exclamation mark next to it. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software, and I've tried pointing the USB device to find an updated driver on the CD, but neither solution has worked. He also has the most updated Windows Service Pack (4) with the most updated USB drivers.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the computer to recognize the Palm USB connection? Or is there perhaps an adapter (USB to serial) or a USB hub that I can install that will help? I've never had any trouble configuring Palms that have serial connections, only the USB. So any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you!

have ou tried deleting the palm usb in my computer / devices to force it to recognise a new bit of hardware again? [i.e. same are you were in to get it to look for a new driver]

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I just tried that again, and the computer adds the new hardware, but is unable to locate the correct driver. It says that it found a closer match for the driver (c:\\winnt\inf\usb.inf). And when it installs the driver, it says "The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance." And even if I manually point it to the CD to find an updated driver, it won't install it. I'm running out of options!!

hi, em, your error, involving the usb.inf file shows it's windows NT that's running, or at least that 's what it looks like, in which case if I remember right, the T|E doesn't run on WINNT...
check in case something screwy with the OS is happening, but it looks like that's the problem...

just the error is giving winnt as the directory, that's why I suggest checking the Operating System... Just in case...
Failing that, [and no I've no idea why it did sync initially] I'll leave you to the experts on the board... sorry

As far as I know, there is No Red exclamation mark. If it's a Red X on the USB in Device manager, then your problem is simple. Just right click and choose Enable.

I have the same problem... both at work, where we are on NT/2000, and at home where I am on XP.
I have synched at both of these locations plenty in the past, but with some swapping of USB peripherals, I seem to have lost the communication with the USB cradle... I too have default USB drivers installed as the "closest match"
I would love to hear the solution if you ended up finding one out!
