graffiti background disappeared on nr70v/u

My nr70v/u was working great until yesterday.
I got a reset message launching an app. Had to reset w/paper clip.

After reset (and a couple of other tries) I cannot get the black graffiti part of the screen to show up. I can write on the gray area, but no black background or icons.

What could have happened and please tell me there's a fix short of reinstalling everything.

Try a Hard Reset. While holding down the power button push in the reset button. Continue holding the power button for 8 to 10 seconds. After you release the power button you will get a screen asking you if you wish to proceed with the reset. Press the up scroll button if you do.
This procedure sends your unit back to it's original configuration like it is brand new, so hopefully you will get everything back once you hot sync.

Depending on the way you back up you may need to reinstall some 3rd party apps. A warm reset might have also been a good intemediate step.
To perform a warm reset:
1. Press and hold the upper half of the scroll button on your handheld.
2. Using the reset tip tool (or a similar object without a sharp tip), gently press the reset button inside the hole on the back panel of your handheld.
3. When the Palm Computing Platform logo appears on the screen, release the scroll button.
